IT'S A LIVING

Where the hell did this show go? I would love to see it again. Produced by the team who brought us "Golden Girls". Starring Ann Jillian, Marian Mercer, Susan Sullivan, Gail Edwards, Wendy Schaal, Bert Remsen, Louise Lasser, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Crystal Bernard, Richard Schaal, Paul Kreppel, Earl Boehn and Barrie Youngfellow as Jan...although not all on the same seasons.

The theme song was written by none other than Leslie Bricusse.

They need to bring this show back!

I mentioned this show just recently at work. None of the people younger than me had any idea what I was talking about.

You left out one hugely important cast member.

Broadway's own Tony-winner for "Promises, Promises," Marian Mercer!

Loved this show, loved the theme song ...

I used to work right across the street from the building in downtown L.A. that they used for the exterior shots.

And yes, every time I went inside, I hummed the theme song.

LOVED this show!
I think I preferred the seasons that included Sheryl Lee Ralph. But it was all good.
Didn't Mercer die recently?

Okay, a minor threadjack into cool Leslie Bricusse TV theme songs.

He wrote this one for the short-lived '80s sitcom "I'm a Big Girl Now," starring Diana Canova and Danny Thomas.

Diana Canova sings the theme (very well, I might add!). The melody and orchestration are surprisingly complex.

I used to love this, and I miss "Broadway-esque" theme songs ... especially by Leslie Bricusse.

I loved "It's a Living"! Especially Gail Edwards as Dot, Mercer and Crystal Bernard.

Great sense memory besty! I had forgotten that show and theme. Canova was a great comedic actress. I loved her other 80s show "Throb". She was a great singer too, and was hilarious in the 95 revival of "Company". I know she's not dead, but havent seen her since then.

I should be brutally spanked for that and have my gay card revoked. Not only is PROMISES, PROMISES on my all time favorite musicals Top 10 list but I love Marian Mercer!

Thanks for the correction besty!

I wish I had held on to my old VHS'. I had almost every single episode of this show on tape.

Warner Bros. holds the rights to it. Shout! Factory should look into obtaining the necessary licensing to release it in much the same way they acquired the rights from Sony to release "Designing Women".

I read somewhere that one of the reasons holding this show up on DVD is music licensing fees. Paul Kreppel sang a lot of snippets to songs in various episodes, so Warners would have to pay the publishers, songwriters, artists and whomever else is entitled to get paid..and that I'm told is costly.

I don't understand why a station like MeTV, AmericanLife, Hallmark, TV Land, Retro TV or even Antenna TV doesn't obtain the broadcast rights and air it. It's been MIA for over a decade I believe.

Loved Angie too, but those shows weren't on during the same seasons. Alas, Angie only lasted one season, years before Small Wonder. I think It's a Living also started after Angie's demise.

At some point, wasn't it also called Making A Living?

"it's funny how Doris Roberts still looked old. and that was almost 40 years ago."

I feel as if Doris Roberts knew she was only going to play slightly crotchety old women and willed herself to look like that 40 years ago, and then froze herself at that age. She looked much the same playing Father Tim's mom (and thus Diana Canova's mother-in-law) on Soap as she did playing Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond, except for the change in hair color and style.

"At some point, wasn't it also called Making A Living?"

Yes, when Sheryl Lee Ralph took over for Ann Jillian. It was rather historic, as it was the first time an actress of color had ever replaced a caucasian performer on a television show, much less the 'sexy character'.

Best TV theme song ever. And I loved the show. If there was ever a sitcom that could be developed into a musical, this would be it.

This ran in first run syndication, right? (A format that now seems to be dead when it comes to scripted tv.) I barely remember it from my childhood, though I remember enjoying it (my frame of reference was that it had Ann Jillian who I knew as the Red Queen from the TV Alice in Wonderland and how shocking I found her hair colour.)

I’m bumping this thread because this show been saved by the good folks at Logo for almost two years....they began airing it in April 2018. It has also been acquired by Antenna TV and airs weeknights at 8 with an additional 2 episodes airing Sundays beginning at 10 pm!
