""Don't Forget Me" at the end of "Bombshell" reaches the silliness level of "I Will Never Leave You" at the end of "Side Show" (a show I do love). Yeah, duh, of course you're not going anywhere. It's the same with Marilyn. Of course you're not going to be forgotten. We all know that, and we don't need to sing happy birthday or covet diamonds to remember her - she's ubiquitous. Imagine if instead they'd written a song in which Marilyn implores everyone to forget her, because of the tragedy of her life or whatever. I'm not saying it's a golden idea, and it requires writing a level of irony that I don't think Smash is capable of, but I still think just about anything would make more sense than this song. "
I thought when she said "See diamonds you wish were all free" she thought that she needed men to buy them for her, and that the women who came after her would need them as well. This is just my interpretation.
I also believe Marilyn was murdered.
On a side note, could an actress sing that number on stage every night in the real world? Not to mention Let me be your Star in the beginning. This is a very challenging score.
But it isn't just "Let me be your Star" and Don't forget Me". They have to worry about:
SMASH Never Give All the Heart The 20th Century Fox...
Who am I kidding, that is a crazy score to sing every night. Megan Hilty herself has said she would like to meet the woman who can sing this eight times a week.
"I think lying to children is really important, it sets them off on the right track" -Sherie Rene Scott-
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
It is a terribly tough score...almost every song that Marilyn sings is a vocal workout. Let's not forget Cut, Print..., They Just Keep Moving The Line, Let's Be Bad...the whole score is a monster to sing! Would love to see it live!
Even Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman say, that the woman playing Marylin would probably die at the end of the show... It's in the interview on the Bombshell cast recording.
In the real world the only people who burst into song are the hopelessly deranged...
>> "So, does this mean we'll never get Bombshell on Broadway? Unless they go down the Matilda rode and cast at least two Marilyns."
I think it's more likely that Bombshell will not be seen on Broadway because there's no book for it. All we've seen on the TV show are a collection of stand-alone musical numbers.
For the purpose of TV, there doesn't need to be a book where these songs actually "fit". The TV audience only needs to be impressed by a slew of production numbers.

HONESTLY NOT JUST SAYING THIS BUT: Karen's version was like an American Idol performance, powerful and beautiful and polished. Ivy's was like a Broadway performance, emotional, raw, and heartbreaking. Considering that Smash is about a Broadway show, I think Ivy is the best choice for the role of? Marilyn.

Whaddaya bet that out there among the fans there are at least ten people trying their hands at writing a book? (Guided by the summary in the CD package, of course.) Just for the fun of it, or in some cases really dreaming that it might happen.
Yup, Hilty's version still isn't on iTunes and Marc's site isn't working for me. Anyone have the official version that could post and share? I would be so grateful!!!
That's fantastic news! I can't wait for iTunes to get Megan's version of Don't Forget Me! I wonder why it wasn't available at the same time the show aired like the other songs usually are?
I agree totally. I also feel that Katherine sings every song like a pop star and when I see her sing, I always see Katherine singing. The big difference for me is that Megan Hilty is also an ACTRESS so when she sang the song, it was Marilyn singing. Both women can sing but when it comes to being Marilyn, Megan to me wins hands down.
