I'm a little surprised that the changes to the robbery haven't been called out. Maybe it's not politically correct to make Eponine appear undereducated because she's female or poor? But they keep the "she's never had a scrap of brains"?? I missed the lyrics in more recent versions and the movie but I think it gives a better picture of Marius thoughts on Eponine. Mme. ThenardierThese bloody students on our streetHere they come slumming once againOur Eponine would kiss their feetShe never had a scrap of brainMariusEponine, what's up today?I haven't seen you much about.EponineHere, you can always catch me in.MariusMind the police don't catch you out!EponineHere, whatcher doing with all them books?I could have been a student too!Don't judge a girl on how she looks...I know a lot of things I do!MariusPoor Eponine, the things you knowYou wouldn't find in books like these.EponineI like the way you grow your hairMariusI like the way you always teaseEponineLittle he knows!Little he sees!
If anyone speaks French I recommend getting your hands on the Paris Cast Recording (which is different from the Concept Album). Many of the lyrics are direct/nearly direct translations of the English ones. Others are interesting variant lyrics. I've never looked, but I'm guessing you can probably find a translation of these French lyrics someplace online. The Concept Album is something else entirely. I got hooked on it before I heard the English version. Talk about variant lyrics, though!!
My Oh My said: "...they appear to lead the freshly croaked Valjean to the big spaghetti monster in the sky who lives in a castle on a cloud."Reading this made my day. I've seen this show several times over the years, and while there's some great stuff in it, I've always been put off by the excessive "our god in heaven", "grace of god" preach-iness of the whole affair. From a plausibility perspective, I just don't get how characters whose lives are depicted as one wretched experience after another can go on and on about how great their god is. The "lead me to the spaghetti monster's castle on the cloud" finale scene make me want to smack every one of them.
"she's never had a scrap of brains" reflects poorly on Eponine's mother. Not Eponine. There's no reason to get rid of it.
