The Public Theatre's Shakespeare/Park presents INTO THE WOODS -- Discussion

The Public Theater will begin previews on Monday, July 23 for Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical INTO THE WOODS, the second show of The Public’s 50th Anniversary season at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Directed by Timothy Sheader with co-direction by Liam Steel, INTO THE WOODS will continue for five weeks through Saturday, August 25, with an official press opening on Thursday, August 9.

Tickets to Shakespeare in the Park are FREE and are distributed, two per person, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park the day of the show. The Public Theater will again offer free tickets through our Virtual Ticketing lottery at www.shakespeareinthepark.org on the day of the show. All performances are at 8 p.m. Conceived by Joe Papp as a way to make great theater accessible to all, over the past 50 years more than five million people have enjoyed more than 150 free productions of Shakespeare and other classical works and musicals at the Delacorte.

The production stars Amy Adams (Baker’s Wife); Jack Broderick (Narrator); Gideon Glick (Jack); Cooper Grodin (Rapunzel’s Prince); Ellen Harvey (Cinderella’s Stepmother); Ivan Hernandez (Cinderella’s Prince, Wolf); Tina Johnson (Red Ridinghood’s Granny); Josh Lamon (Steward); Bethany Moore (Florinda); Jessie Mueller (Cinderella); Donna Murphy (The Witch); Denis O’Hare (The Baker); Jennifer Rias (Lucinda); Laura Shoop (Cinderella’s Mother); Tess Soltau (Rapunzel); Sarah Stiles (Little Red Ridinghood); Kristine Zbornik (Jack’s Mother); with Chip Zien (Mysterious Man) and Glenn Close (Voice of The Giant). The non-Equity ensemble features Victoria Cook, Johnny Newcomb, Noah Radcliffe, and Eric R. Williams.

Who plans on trying to attend tomorrow night (Monday)'s first preview or sometime else during the month-long run? Good luck to everyone who tries to get tickets!

I have a ticket for tomorrow night, but I am terrified that it will be cancelled due to rain and thunder.

Doesn't the virtual lottery usually open at midnight for entries? Right now it says:

VIRTUAL TICKETING ENTRY

There is no performance today.

Due to the inclement weather this past week, the first preview has been cancelled. Expect an announcement soon.

Huh. Just when I was about to grumble about the virtual ticketing system being junk again... I'm just glad that there weren't many/any campers out waiting. I walked by the theatre last night and they were still rehearsing around 10:15.

^Maybe the fact that no one was camping that early is a good sign for tickets tomorrow?

I'm curious how big of a draw Amy Adams will be. The fact that it's Into the Woods will likely be a bigger draw than most Shakespeare plays but I wonder if Amy Adams will bring out the line insanity like Anne Hathaway. I'm hoping that's not the case.

bradwaydevil-it's FREE and Amy Adams is in it-go figure if it's going to be popular.

^There's a difference between popular and having to line up at midnight the night before. That was the subtle distinction I was going for. I guess we'll need to wait and see.

broadwaydevil-I think it's going to be as popular as the Anne Hathaway production of Twelfth Night. (Maybe more so since it's a musical.)

broadwaydevil - I'm changing my dog's evening walks to in front of 81st street and CPW for the next month. Happy to report on if/when people start lining up (at least if it's before midnight).

7/22 - 11pm - 0 in line.

Things are never as crazy the first week of previews.

dtz-maybe I'll see you since I am up that way, too.

Kad-While they aren't that crazy the first week of previews (especially considering the forecast for the week is not promising, Wed. aside), I think it's going to be a tough wait.

Dtz - you're the best! I will be checking late tonight/early tomorrow morning if you have a chance to walk by. I can't decide which day is the best to go. I know this week will certainly be the best but I wonder if tomorrow will be tough because there's a lot of people who want to go to the "first" preview.

Previews of Forbidden Broadway start on the 24th, too. So if we don't get ITW tickets, maybe we can console ourself with some parody!

Do people usually start waiting in line at 11 PM for the first week of previews?

^ I'm hoping not. I can't go this week, but was hoping to make plans to be in NYC Tuesday for a Wednesday performance. I will camp out if I have to. But there is a huge difference between waiting 7 hours versus 14.

i am also looking for advice on what would be a reasonable time to line up. I was thinking 6am as well, but is the park open at that time? Where do you line up if the park is closed?

The park opens at 6 AM. If there are people lined up before 6 AM (on 81st street, I believe), the line monitor will walk them to the line inside of the park and have everyone else begin lining up behind them.
