I've found it useful in discussions like this to ask "If you found out that McDonalds [Olive Garden, Wendy's, etc.] gave a portion of their profits to the KKK, would you still patronize them?"
It's worked so far, though of course I don't hang around genuinely crazy or bigoted people (as far as I know). I'm sure lots of folks would pull out the "skin color is not the same as sexual orientation" card--but only if they're already full-on homophobes.
"I mean, I get that not everyone stays informed about EVERYTHING, but I'm so tired of people framing this as being about what Cathy said and not what Cathy (and his company's money) does."
Same here! I responded to someone from high school who posted Huckabee's response...so had to let her have it. Not another "like" or post after I wrote what I wrote. Not that I've changed small minds, however. I did stop short of the KKK comparison, though Reg. I wasnt able to frame it as well as you, as usual!
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
I think a lot of people think the issue is just "Chick-Fil-A is a Christian organization and the gays have a problem with that."
Unless they're gay (and sometimes even then--I'm looking at you, Antoine), they don't really understand what these organizations like Focus on the Family actually do. They think "Hmm, they support the traditional family. Sorry, gays, but what's wrong with that?"
And when I explain that they exist solely to work toward denying rights to a group of Americans, they start to get it.
If this were reversed (and we lived in a bizarro world where the reverse was possible) and the PR person from an outspokenly pro-gay company had died we'd hear this was God's wrath.
I live in a bizarro world where God hates straight people, so I think it is God's wrath!
They will blame the gays for this. Frankly,I'm surprised they had any sort of PR director. Judging by the events over the past 2 weeks you would never know it.

I lol'd when i first heard about the PR guy. It wasn't as satisfying as the day Jerry Falwell finally dropped dead, but the little things do count for something.

This fracas has just made me hate the world. I don't think anyone has posted it yet, but there's a picture of Sarah Palin and Todd loading up at Chik Fil A. F*CK all this noise.
My point is that all the hate and intolerance has to be put in perspective. This stuff that is obviously hateful has always been around. When my father, from Brooklyn, fought in WW2 he ended up transfered to a company from Texas, the nicest guys he'd ever met. They risked their lives for one another.
A few years later at a reunion in Texas he and my mom. who is very dark complected after a week in the sun, are asked to leave a restaurant because she looks black and it's 1954.
Things do change. It's just agonizingly slow and frustrating.
Somewhere out there is someone we call a terrorist. He doesn't care whether you're straight and a bigot or gay. And he would never understand this thread and the fact we can have it.
We need to be very careful how we judge people. And we need to remember that people can change.
Holding bigoted views is one thing. Actively supporting view that further those causes, which come at the expense of others, is another. That's the point I think you're overlooking. Who cares what he believes? No one is telling him he can't believe any way he wants. But he contributes money to hate groups.
Honestly Phyllis I do understand and I recognize the difference. He's using his vast resources to hurt people. Yet, in the process, he shines a light on ignorance. And most people sit back and watch and listen and are not vocal. But they really do see it for what it is.
If the same restaurant that asked my mother to leave was still around today they would probably place a photo of Obama on the wall if he were to visit.
Will Swenson posted this on twitter... ?@thewillswenson “@SarahPalinUSA: Stopped by Chick-fil-A in The Woodlands to support a great business. http://fb.me/KM9ogGda ” Haters unite.
Very true about haters uniting to spread hatred together. I hope the Chic-fil-A is still standing after that much idiocy being in one place at the same time.
