I found this charming video of Max showing the backstage workings of "Evita", along with a special appearance by a recent Tony winner. from Broadway.com... RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Max von Essen is adorable; I sure wouldn't mind getting him instead of Ricky, so to speak! On a really ungallant note, is the air con turned off backstage to protect the voices as, lovely as she is, Elena is sporting some most unfortunate sweat patches.....
^ As you said, the air conditioning is terrible for a singer's voice so maybe she intentionally doesn't have it on as the video was taken before a show; or maybe she was doing her pre-show stretching. Didn't Aretha Franklin not want air conditioning on in any building in which she was performing in order to not irritate her voice?
Wonder why Max didn't get a video of Ricky's pre-show warm up... oh wait, CarlosAlberto wouldn't allow it.
That video was really adorable. I love Elena's "Whaaaaaaat?" I got my tickets for Evita when Ricky Martin's out, hopefully Max von Essen'll be Che when I see it.
Rainbowhigh23, years ago, Aretha was scheduled to do a concert at our Florida Theatre, (old theatre turned concert venue) during the middle of summer. Part of her demands stated that the air conditioning would be turned off to protect her voice. Even though it was the middle of summer, many of the audience were dressed in long sleeve, wraps and formal wear. After numerous complaints by the audience about the heat, management finally turned on the air conditioner. Aretha came on stage, did one song, then walked off, due to the air conditioner. She refused to come back on stage even if the air was turned off. Management had to give back all the money and Aretha was never allowed to perform at the theatre. (As of this writing).
I went to the taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon back in December, the episode she sang on. She had pre-taped her performance, as she was a guest a week or so earlier, but Jimmy said to us "Be THANKFUL she is not here, we were not allowed to have the air conditioning on while she was here and so the studio got to be over 100 degrees, and we were all dying."
