As much as I appreciate ridiculously attractive Eponines (and let's face it, Samantha Barks definitely is one), I'd rather have an Eponine that plays the character true to the book. There's enough room in her role in the musical for an actress to give it more than the spunky/lovesick interpretation we often get (Celia Keenan-Bolger is my favorite example of this).

Well I did like Celia's portrayal, she was really good. I think I would be a OK with an Eponine who is pretty, but also has a disturbing personality, due to the things she had to go through growing up in poverty. However, I did like that in the musical she's not as devious as her parents, since she didn't want Marius to die, like in the novel.

while Samantha Barks is totally gorgeous as Epinone, I think the costume/hair/styling gets the point across. This is a major Hollywood motion picture and it makes sense they would want a gorgeous girl like Samantha; not to mention she's quite talented to boot.

BroadwayStar4- I actually like Eponine in the novel much better than Eponine in the musical. She's one of the more complex and interesting characters in the book while she comes across as a more of a lovestruck teenager who is a victim of her circumstance. In the novel she is both a victim of circumstance and has a questionable personality. It makes her death more of a moment of redemption rather than simply tragedy.

FANtomFollies- I agree for the most part. I hope they make her a little dirtier, but pretty much every picture we've gotten of her has been in the rain, so it's hard to say. Hooper should be able to get an excellent performance out of her.

While Eponine was more complex in the novel, I still prefer Eponine in the musical, because I cared more about her since she was someone that I, and many people, can relate to, and we want her to have a happy ending. That makes her tragedy more heartbreaking rather than a redeeming moment for her.

I think that's part of the reason why I prefer her in the novel- I can't speak for your situation, but a lot of the people who "relate" to Eponine only relate to the unrequited love part of her, which completely negates the other parts of her, namely growing up in an abusive household in extremely poverty. The unrequited love being her major character trait as it is in the musical kind of allows people to ignore that part of her and ultimately warps what I think was Hugo's intention with her character. I actually think that her death in the novel is more tragic, because it shows her rising above both the conditions of her upbringing and her own selfish qualities.

I think some people relate to her not just because of the 'unrequited love' thing, but because she's a feisty, strong character who is also vulnerable. In the musical, they made it clear that she's living in poverty, and we all know how hard that must be. Plus, her parents are the Thenardiers, so we feel even more sorry for her, because who in the world would want parents like them? Sure, the unrequited love plays a big part in this, but we still don't forget the other side of her. When I watch her death scene, it saddens me because not only did she not win the guy, but she also never had a happy, meaningful life that she craved. I understand what you're saying though, but I think either way it works.

I'm worried that Eponine will be prettier than Cosette, though. Sorry, but IMO Cosette should be the most beautiful--Marius pretty much only loves her because she's beautiful. In the novel, anyway.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Don't forget, standards of beauty were different when the novel was set. The frumpiness of Cosette's appearance could very well be what Marius found attractive in her. Based on that Eponine pic, she may have been considered too "loose."

Morally. Look at how her boobs are hanging out compared to how Cosette is usually dressed.

Segment from Entertainment Tonight with a few new clips. It looks like we'll be seeing some sort of flashback with Fantine and Tholomyes. Also, it seems as though the big barricade we've been seeing is just for the finale. There's one shot of Enjolras on one in what looks like a sound stage on top of a barricade that looks to be in a more logical location like it was in the novel.

Where do you see a flashback scene? I just see the barricade scene (it's true that's for the finale, it was shot in Greenwich - there's a YouTube video for it, there was another with Hugh doing a tribute with smaller barricades shot at Pinewood), Enjolras/barricade boys and Cosette and Marius (who is swearing a sling).

That's not Tholomyes that Anne's talking to, it's Tom Hooper. He's wearing a red jacket and has a pair of black headphone hanging around his neck. She's wearing the same rough shawl that we see her in in the trailer when she's walking down the alley, presumably to have her hair cut off.

When the scene flashes by, it does look like Hooper is some guy in period clothes. I had to pause the scene to make out who it was, but it's definitely Hooper.

Some insights from Tom Hooper, from an interview in the new issue of Empire magazine --

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a395280/les-miserables-wont-be-camp-says-director-tom-hooper.html

>>"There is nothing camp about this musical," Hooper told Empire.

"It is very grounded, very masculine and very strong about the big universal themes.

"It's not first and foremost a musical. It's first and foremost a terrific story that uses the musical form to express itself."

Of recording live vocals with a pianist playing via an ear-piece, Hooper explained: "The thing about singing it live is it allows the illusion that the actors are thinking the songs up.

"I say to Hugh [Jackman], 'With that verse, just give yourself a fraction more time to let the new idea form, then sing about it'. It's completely revolutionary."<<<

The picture of Hathaway in the read dress is haunting and stunning. Maybe she dies on the street or this is after the Bamatabois sequence.

I can't think of it being any scene except Fantine's Arrest.

She definitely dies the same way she does in the musical - there was a brief glimpse of it in the bootleg CinemaCon video. I agree it's the arrest - and I love the photo of Amanda and Eddie.

Ahhh. I'm getting ridiculously excited!! I wish I weren't so effing nervous at the same time. I'm really savoring this, it's an exciting time for any fan. I don't think I'll be able to see it at a regular screening and will likely attend a midnight showing, or something. I want there to be virtually nobody in the auditorium! Like when I saw the film version of Sweeney Todd, there were like 5 people in the theatre because it was a past midnight showing I had decided to attend at the last minute. I loved the feeling it was all just for me. That's how I want to see this!!

This photo is very poignant --

I can imagine Valjean singing :

"I've seen your face before
Show me some way to help you
How have you come to grief
In such a place as this"

Maybe it's because I rarely watch movies that aren't on Lifetime, but this bulls-eye chart is very confusing. I mean, I see some of it appears to be book-to-movie adaptations, but what is the North Korean flag doing there with a toothbrush?

Apoparently that's a chart that EW does every week, and it encompasses everything in pop culture, not just movies. Hence stuff like the toothbrush...
