Well the way the first six episodes happened and deviated from the comics with some characters added who never existed and certain sub-plots added, it was definitely not a guarantee it was going to happen.
Who knows if this was Darabont's plan or Mazzara's plan. Be interesting if people were on different pages of the show's direction.
