you might be right..ugh this season..and also do tony's really matter that much anymore?
i guess they do. Memphis is dreadful and it only kept running because of the TONY award. In the heights wasn't great but it also ran 2 years because of the TONY Award. But Billy Elliot won and it only ran for 2 years..I dunno,..So if you win a TONY you are guaranteed AT LEAST a 2 year run.

Since I missed this off-Broadway, I'm so glad I'll get a chance to see it here. I've heard almost nothing but glowing things, so I can't wait!

Great news! I really wanted to see this when it was playing off-Broadway last year, so it's on my to do list when I'm back in NYC this summer. For those who have seen the show and/or have been in the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, how well do you think Peter and the Starcatcher will work in that space?

'Smash' wraps up filming for the season in March, so I think there's still a chance that Christian Borle could open the production.

Let me put it this way: Christian knows that this is probably his best chance at winning a Tony award. I have a feeling he will do everything in his power to make himself available for the show.

If Borle DOES do the show, he could certainly be a draw if SMASH is a smash.

According to this piece in the NY Times, Borle said he would not be reprising his role due to conflicts with SMASH. Disappointing, since he was excellent as Black Stache, but it'll be interesting to see who his replacement is.

What other new plays are opening apart from Clybourne Park and Magic/Bird, think Peter and the Starcatcher has a real shot of winning the best New Play Tony and it'll be a comeback for Disney after Tarzan and Mermaid misfired for them.

END OF THE RAINBOW is being billed as a play and ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS is still due. They will also be up against the plays from earlier in the season: RELATIVELY SPEAKING, STICK FLY, THE MOUNTAINTOP, CHINGLISH, SEMINAR, THE ROAD TO MECCA, THE COLUMNIST, OTHER DESERT CITIES and VENUS IN FUR (and SHATNER'S WORLD, technically). And possibly WIT if they don't consider it a revival.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER may very well beat all of those, but it's got a lot more competition than you're implying.

This is not a slam dunk by any means for Peter and the Starcatchers. I am excited to see it, but it's a very tough, competitive season for best play:

Other Desert Cities
Clybourne Park
Venus in Fur
The Mountaintop
Chinglish
Magic/Bird
One Man, Two Guvnors (from what I hear, it will likely be deemed a new play)
End of the Rainbow*(this is questionable-whether it will be a play or musical)
Seminar
Relatively Speaking

(Now I know not all of these are viable, but I think many are-including Clybourne Park, Chinglish (yes, it's closing, but the reviews were good), Venus in Fur and Other Desert Cities, as well as One Man, Two Guvnors. It's a crowded year for new plays-which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I think "Other Desert Cities" has it in the bag. It got slam-dunk reviews, and it's doing great at the box office. Clybourne Park already has the Pulitzer coming into the season, so if that does great box office, who knows.

RippedMan-I think it's between those two plays as well, with One Man, Two Guvnors as the unknown quantity. I think "Venus" will be rewarded in best actress for Nina Arianda (but would not be shocked and/or disappointed if it snagged a nod for best play as I loved it).

I think Stick Fly may take a nomination in the best play category, but that's up for debate.

I'm pretty sure that even after the casting is officially announced and Borle is not on the cast list, people will still be saying that there's still a chance he'll do it. It doesn't matter how many times he himself and people who would know say that he's not.

We still don't know how "Peter and the Starcatchers" is going to play uptown. Sure, it got great reviews, and did great business downtown, but so did "Scottsboro Boys" and "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." People may not be willing to pay $100+ to see a "less technical" version of Peter Pan. I think the whole idea of "poor theater" is great, but not for a commercial production.

And I don't see "Stick Fly" getting any nominations. It didn't even get good reviews, and I'd be surprised if it's still playing when the Tony noms come out.

I could see Condola Rashad being nominated. She's excellent, and many of the reviews singled her out as the show's best asset. The set will also almost surely be nominated.

I think PETER will have a lot more wide-ranging appeal than a show like BBAJ or SCOTTSBORO BOYS.

For the record, AC, I always say that until the ink is dry, anything is possible. Back in 2009 everyone was saying that Cheyenne Jackson would not be coming to Broadway with Finian's Rainbow just because he had mentioned that he wasn't going to a few months earlier in an interview. But I kept saying "unless he has other work going on, I'm guessing he'll make the transfer." And I ended up being right. Just because Christian has said that it will most likely be impossible for him to do Smash and Peter doesn't mean they can work something miraculous out in the next few weeks. I'm just saying that IF there is a way to make it work, Christian will find it. If not, then that's that. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that it COULD still happen at this point.

Jesus, this is the year for plays!

Although when all boils down, I think there will be three clear nominees in OTHER DESERT CITIES, CLYBOURNE PARK, and VENUS IN FUR...The remaining slot is anyone's guess.

Commence the Tony bloodbath!

That's one way to look at it, but today's NY Times article has Borle saying rather definitively that he won't be doing it:

Casting details will be announced later, though Christian Borle, who played the Captain Hook character Black Stache Off Broadway, said in a recent interview with The New York Times that he would not be reprising the role because of scheduling conflicts with his coming NBC series “Smash.”

This isn't others saying it won't happen; it's coming straight from the horse's mouth. And given that SMASH is still shooting and will be debuting right around the time PETER would be going into rehearsal--with the cast doing press and whatnot--it seems like Borle would know whether or not his commitments will preclude him from being in the cast.
