"Apparently it costs the NYPL quite a bit of money to record broadway shows (and they record EVERY broadway show) but as of last week they weren't going to be taping Follies b/c they can't afford to put out the money to tape it if they don't have permission to share it with people that come to the library...there wouldn't be any point."
That bolded part isn't even remotely close to true. Many Broadway shows are never recorded. If someone wants it recorded and has the money, it will be recorded. There are plenty of reasons that people don't like Mrs Goldman. I'm not sure this should be one of them. She won't live forever, you know.
*sigh*. Good times. I wish this was filmed. It sucks so much they didn't do it for the archive. If we can bump threads from 2006 surely we can bump threads from last year :P!
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I also wish they'd have filmed it professionally. It was the one thing I had been waiting for forever, a show that made me excited to see again and again, and one that intrigued me theatrically. I can't believe I just barely got to see it--the final performance in Los Angeles, and I spent a pretty penny on my 3rd row, orchestra center seat, something I'm more than willing to do normally but not at THAT price and for a show I had little knowledge about. The crazy decision to purchase that ticket, while knowing it was way beyond my means, is a stupid one I will always be glad I made.
