I'm surprised that SBC and HBC are still in "negotiations". HBC has been in talks for this role for months, hasn't she? How much more negotiating could there be to do?? Either take it or give it a pass so they can go on to the next candidate...

Some of the negotiations involve scheduling, and that can take a long time to work out. According to that more "reputable" article, Geoffrey Rush had to bow out of this movie because of another project. They couldn't work out the scheduling.

I've been wondering for some time how they will adapt this sung-through musical to the screen. I would guess that the average person isn't interested in sitting through a film that is completely sung-through. I would also guess that a sung-through musical wouldn't translate well to screen.

Do others think they will keep that element or change it? If they change it, will all of the lines that aren't part of an actual song just be turned to dialogue? Will there be rewrites?

It's been reported by the screenwriter that there will be cuts musically and dialogue (not spoken recitative, actual dialogue) will be added. It will not be sung through.

On a side note:
Can Rachel Hurd-Wood sing? She would be my ideal Cosette. She was an absolutely fantastic Wendy in Peter Pan a few years ago.

Since Lea's new film, 'New Year's Eve' had a disappointing opening weekend at the box office, it might hurt her chances at getting the role of Eponine if they wanted someone else to draw audiences at the box office. 'Glee: The 3D Concert Movie' also underperformed. If Taylor Swift's feature film debut had a stronger start, things might be looking good for her:

"According to Box Office Mojo, 'Valentine's Day,' which starred Taylor Swift, earned over $70 million in its first week. Michele and Swift are reportedly both being considered for the role of Eponine in the feature film version of 'Les Miserables,' but if 'New Years Eve' and 'Valentine's Day' are any indication of who has more star power, things are looking good for the country star."

Taylor Swift wasn't the main character of Valentine's Day. Same with Michele in NYE.

Hopefully Hooper will only consider ONE factor: Can they perform the part better than anybody else available? Rather than box office returns of unrelated movies where you can't even prove that Michele or Swift had anything at all to do with the film's success or failure.

Lea Michele is one of, what, 20 characters in that film? Besides those romcoms come out every holiday hoping to attain the success of Love, Actually, but they never do. I would hardly consider that a mark against her.

Lea had this to say about the film recently,

"That piece means so much to me," says Michele, 25, who made her Broadway debut at age 8 as Young Cosette in "Les Mis." "I'm such a fan of the show that I'm just glad they're making a film version of it. I can't wait to see it."

I don't know if that last sentence means if she did not get the part and is looking forward to seeing the film or if she still does not know if she's been cast or not.

This is very interesting! Russell is filming "Broken City" in New Orleans right now. I wonder if the last "hint" is Swift...

>>You may recall that, in last week’s Mosh Pit, I discussed the casting of the upcoming film version of “Les Miserables.” Well, there’s one part of the story that I left out. One Chicagoan has a very special role in this film. It’s a story that some of you already know, but that to my knowledge hasn’t been told to the world at large--before now. Jeff Award-winning Chicago musical director and vocal coach Roberta Duchak is coaching Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe on his songs for the film, and has been doing so since last summer!

I had the pleasure of speaking to Roberta by phone this past Monday. She couldn’t meet with me at Columbia College Chicago, where she teaches, or at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, where she frequently musical directs (“Ragtime” and “Sweeney Todd” are just two of her extensive number of credits there). Why isn’t she in Chicago, you ask? Because she is New Orleans for a few weeks, teaching “Stars” to a star. Ever since last summer, when Crowe was living in Naperville, working on a certain superhero film in the Plano area, she has been paid by the “Les Miz” film itself, not Crowe, to get him in tip-top shape to play and sing the role of Inspector Javert in the highly anticipated film. She was with him for his audition for the role in New York (also in the room were stage producer Cameron Mackintosh and composer Claude-Michel Schonberg), and she has spent time with him in Los Angeles, Vancouver and (for three weeks in December) in Australia. She told me that he loves to sing (he comes from a rock background), he has improved and seen his hard work pay off, and that “Old Man River” from “Show Boat” is his favorite warm-up song! Sometimes they work every day. Sometimes they don’t. He loves it. So does she. And you just never know what life will bring, do you?

She confirmed reports I’ve read that the cast will have a six-week rehearsal period, commencing in mid-February, and that shooting will last until July, with mid-December as the targeted release date. It is true that the cast will be singing live while the cameras roll. But she told me that one aspect of the film that has been widely reported very recently is in fact not true! Stay tuned to your favorite media outlets for future developments. Seriously. And in the meantime, let’s all wish Russell and Roberta the best, and get just a wee bit jealous. But why shouldn’t she be doing this? I’m sure that the whole cast will have vocal coaches. Why not one of the best, our own Roberta Duchak? What an opportunity. Congratulations!<<

I personally hope that Lea Michele gets the part. I am very much against Taylor Swift in that role. Check out this blog post which lists 15 actresses (some have reportedly auditioned for the part) that would be better than T-Swift.

I can't agree more, especially after seeing Lea on Glee last night. Her tears as she was singing, she looked just like Eponine and it was just another example of how much the movie will be missing out on.

I wonder what report is "not true"? If it's casting it seems like it could be Baron Cohen, Bonham Carter, or Swift? Hoping it's that last one that isn't true haha

I think it's the Swift stuff since the phrasing has a "don't jump off the bridge yet" vibe to it LOL. Not sure people would be so vocal about the other two.

I hope you are right, at the end of the day, even if she can sing the part and act the part, and I am not commenting on either, she is about as opposite of the character as you can get.

I just had a thought. It has been a couple of weeks since the story broke that TS was offered the part and yet their has been no information regarding either her accepting the role or wanting the part. Is it possible that the producers, because they were pressured by the studio to cast her, put this out there to get public reaction and if it doesn't go well, it allows her to save face by declining leaving them free to cast the person that they wanted for the role.

If the Swift part turns out to be untrue I am one of the very few people on this board who will be disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing what Emma Watson would've brought to the role of Cosette, but then that turned out to be nothing more than a rumor. I am a big fan of Swift and I am interested to see what she would've done with the role of Eponine.

If she was not given the part because of negative reaction, then that is STUPID. Nick Jonas got negative reaction for being cast in the 25th Anniversay Concert yet they still let him do it.

"I personally hope that Lea Michele gets the part."

Not me. She is a very talented singer, but she is very overrated as an actress. Plus I don't want 'Glee's ratings to sky-rocket if she got the part.

What is strange is that if they really wanted Taylor Swift, they should have offered her the role of cossette. Her music and the characters that she has potrayed in her vidoes are very similar to the shy innocense of Cossette. As far as Nick Jonas, He played Marius on the London stage, so he already had a connection to the role, giving their decision some credibility. He also looked and fit the part personality wise, making it believable.

*Cosette

As for the supporting players, I'm actually kind of surprised there haven't been more leaks via social media. All I've heard so far is that former West End Eponine Nancy Sullivan will be in it (presumably in "Turning").

It's also unfortuante that most people really are not willing to give Swift a chance.
