Did anybody attend the Kennedy Center Honors last night and, if so, how was the tribute to Jerry Herman? The wire reports indicate that Carol Channing, Kelsey Grammer, and Angela Lansbury performed....

The ticket prices for this even were astronomical. Jerry was trying to get comps for me but they were in very limited supply.

My family and I went out to dinner last night and out first "toast" was to Jerry as he received his award.

I love the commercial running that has Chris Rock talking about Oprah saying "She's so rich, China owes her money"!

How's this for a debby downer of a review of the telecast we're about to watch:
At least we're introduced to a great new word: vehrklemptitude!

Jennifer Hudson was incredible.

She was getting to the crescendo and then they stop the song to introduce the Tennessee State choir. Despite the loss of emotional momentum, it was a brilliant new interpretation of "I'm Here".

Jerry looks like he is having the worst time...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Did anyone else think Sutton's "Before the Parade Passes By" was a little...awkward?

Otherwise, that was a pretty great tribute to Jerry.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Didn't read the posted "review" above, however, my personal take on i this is: Bway has never looked worse. OMFG! That entire Jerry Herman thing was godawful...Mr. Bomer - that voice was horrendous - however, Kelly O'Hara's ALWAYS sounds glorious (to me, anyway). Everyone else, including the dancers was pretty embarrassing. How can all that incredible talent look so bad?? Who wrote that montage anyway? It was like a bad, old HOLLYWOOD PALACE.

When does Sutton not appear awkward?

Jerry looks like he is having the worst time...

I thought the same thing. He looked like he'd rather be anywhere else than there.

I don't LOVE Sutton, but I didn't find her awkward in The Drowsy Chaperone. Or most of Anyone Can Whistle, for that matter. She's just awkward in her everyday life.

I thought Sutton was awkward and they seemed to rush thru everything for the Jerry part...I loved "Hello Jerry" but wished there had been more than 1 line. Sutton was awkward. She's too young for the parade to pass by her. Kelly O'Hara was great and so was Laura Benanti but the makeup and lights really aged her. And where was If He Walked Into My Life?? Of all the songs that Angela should have sung...

What I would have loved is a Barbra-Carol duet of "Hello Dolly"

I love Matt Bomer in White Collar, I had no idea he could sing!

So Carol Channing will be 90 in January, Angela is 85, and Chita will be 77 in January and they were all up there performing! Gotta love that! My daughter said Sutton has no neck and she also thought that it was Bill T. Jones that looked disinterested. The Christines looked beautiful! I would have loved to have seen the full drag costumes.

Angela Lansbury jamming to the Merle Haggard tribute is one of the best things I've ever seen.

The Merle Haggard tribute came across a lot better than the Jerry Herman one.

In terms of the Broadway performances, I thought Hudson and O'Hara "sounded" the best! What a combo!
