The show also depicts husbands as clueless idiots, but that's always been acceptable.

Clueless husbands as a theme has been around since The Honeymooners--probably earlier. It's a tired cliche, but I think Modern Family mainly spins that cliche on its head, and does well by it. Clueless wives is a cliche that's also been prevalent in sitcoms since I Love Lucy--that's what sitcoms do, is take cliches that people know, and (the good sitcoms) switch them up.

Clueless husband/controlling wife can be problematic, too. Modern Family used to walk fine lines and do okay, but not so much now imho. You see the clueless husband in commercials a lot. Bill Cosby used the trope so that he could be the funny one and Clair Huxtable the straight and sensible one.

Clueless husbands have existed since the birth of drama.

Birth of comedy, at any rate. (that's not a slight on your point, Namo, just thinking back to all the Roman comedies I know--which could basically be replaced by modern characters and language). I do think it's overused in commercials to try to sell to women and tell them they're smart, and still need this product.

I know there have been some complaints about the show here. If you do not like the show anymore then just don't post here. I don't like 'Glee' anymore and I ultimately just stopped posting on discussion boards about it.

I'm still going to say my weekly quote.

"I said no tomatoes!"

Loved last night's episode with Ty Burrell and Matthew Broderick. So well played. That was comedic timing at it's best. With Nathan Lane coming on for his reoccuring role as Pepper, it would be great to bring back Broderick's character as a sort of Producers reunion..

I thought both Broderick and the episode were hysterical. Their big scene together had more laughs per minute than I've seen in anything in a while.

They took one of the most tired cliches of modern sitcoms and made it seem fresh.

Last night's episode was good, but I did not think it was one of he greatest.
