That slightly depressed me for the evening now. I still think Raul was robbed.

I think DHP got it for single-handedly making Curtains worth watching. Raul had a better show around him.

Are you kidding me? There was a marathon of "Intervention" on A&E.

You're right Mildred. Nothing good on TV tonight. But remember one short year ago when Brian D'Arcy James, Gavin Creel, and J. Robert Spencer lost the Tony to the pre-tween dancers from Billy Elliot? That's more recent then when Raul Esparza lost the Tony to David Hyde Pierce.

How about 2000, when Boyd Gaines, who didn't sing and barely danced, won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical in Contact, a show with only recorded music, over three actors in Kiss Me, Kate: Michael Mulheren, Michael Berresse, and Lee Wilkof. Oh, and Stephen Spinella from James Joyce's The Dead. Even Gaines has expressed embarrassment over that one. Hell, Berresse should have won on the basis of his set-climbing in "Bianca" alone.

I think we need a show starring DHP and the BE kids. Then we can really see how "good" they are.

P.S. The real star of Curtains was Jason Danieley, everyone went away remembering his performance.

"P.S. The real star of Curtains was Jason Danieley, everyone went away remembering his performance"

Who did he play again?

Just kidding - though my favorite male performer in Curtains was Noah Racey.

At least he sang in Gypsy. Who was Gaines up against that year?

This year's equivalent will be Sean Hayes beating Doug Hodge. I hope it happens!

2008, the year Gaines won for Gypsy:

Daniel Breaker, Passing Strange
Danny Burstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific
Robin De Jesús, In The Heights
Christopher Fitzgerald, The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein
Boyd Gaines, Gypsy

Burstein was robbed - and I actually like Boyd Gaines.

Why all of the hate for "Curtains"? Maybe I have glorified memories because it was one of the first shows I saw on Broadway, but I can't remember anyone in my group not enjoying that night at the theatre!

But for the record: I saw the video of "Company," and no matter how much I enjoyed "Curtains," I do think Esparza deserved the Tony over DHP.

I'm amazed that De Jesus keeps getting nominated, even cast in shows.

I'm over it by now. The more exciting race is CZJ vs Montego. Now that will be fun.

I'd have to disagree. David Hyde Pierce, Debra Monk, and Karen Ziemba gave memorable performances I thought. While I would have given the Tony to Raúl, I thoroughly enjoyed David Hyde Pierce.

And I agree, ghostlight2, Burstein should have won that year. Then again, I'm in the minority that thought Kelli deserved it over Patti.

I remember people wanting Breaker to upset Gaines. I don't recall all of this Burstein love.

For fun I checked how the NY Times predicted it...

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL
Ben Brantley
Will win: Boyd Gaines, “Gypsy”
Should win: Boyd Gaines, “Gypsy”

Charles Isherwood
Will win: Boyd Gaines, “Gypsy”
Should win: Daniel Breaker, “Passing Strange”

I thought Gaines was absolutely heartbreaking. An unforgettable performance.

Breaker, I believe, was Boyd's main competition, not Burstein. But Burstein was definitely my pick.

God, I guess it's likely Sean Hayes WILL win this year, looking at history.

And this truly was an awful night for TV.

Yeah! What a travesty that Boyd Gaines won the Best Performance by a Featured Dancer and Singer in a Musical award!

Oh, wait, that's not what it's called...

Irony, Weez. It's called irony Rembember When Raul Esparza Lost the Tony to David Hyde Pierce... The travesty (travesties) was (were) that he beat out Burstein and Berresse.

"I'd have to disagree. David Hyde Pierce, Debra Monk, and Karen Ziemba gave memorable performances I thought. While I would have given the Tony to Raúl, I thoroughly enjoyed David Hyde Pierce.

Agree with all of the above, Mr Music, and if you're in the minority re: the Patti/Kelli debate, then I'm standing next to you. I very much enjoy LuPone, but I strongly believed that Tony should have gone to O'Hara - and while I know Breaker was a favorite, I didn't even think he deserved the nomination.

I agree yet again, ghostlight2. If anyone from Passing Strange deserved a nomination, it was Colman Domingo. Stew's nomination for Best Actor... Huh?
