Uh-oh! Girlfriend does not need any more stress!

Susan Boyle was the receiving end of some serious fighting words from musical theater star and British songstress Elaine Paige, with whom she was reportedly thrilled to perform a duet in December.

While attending South Bank Awards, Paige lost her lid over Boyle's success.

"It's all about turning someone into an immediate celebrity at the expense of longevity and working hard and experience. Susan Boyle is doing terribly well considering she literally came to the attention of the world overnight with the advent of YouTube."

"She was like a virus really that spread across the world in a nanosecond."

"She is a girl with no experience of anything to do with theatrics, the music business, or art in any way."

"She is a major star because of YouTube. Longevity is gained through knowledge, experience and effort so it will remain to be seen. When I started, YouTube didn't exist but even then with 15 years of experience prior to my success with Evita it was difficult, so I admire the way she handled her sudden success. Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor just take a bunch of people from real life who think they can sing and try and turn them into overnight 'stars' with a couple of songs. Ha ha. It's not entertainment."

Sounds like someone's a little bitter.

May we remind you, you old bat sweetie, that although she has no 'experience,' she achieved her success at 48, has worked her entire life, and her youtube popularity turned into over 3 million album sales - in BOTH the US and UK!

How are your album sales and relevancy in the US?

Let's hope SuBo doesn't get a whiff of this ****ery or she is going to lose her shiz on U!!

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I understand exactly where she's coming from. We live in a time where entertainment is no longer savored, everything is completely consumed in marketing and fickle obsessions and people are turned into quick cash cow overnight stars without any grooming or training, as it were, with genuine talent, passion and soul being optional (and unlikely) traits.

That said, I think Susan Boyle is a wonderful, beautiful singer. There are so many performers who've emerged from the world of reality television who deserve immense derision, but she has not proven herself to be one of them.

Elaine's explanation is heartfelt and very, very gracious. She's a total pro, and has completely supported and upheld Susan Boyle.

She is not, as another poster wrote, an OLD BAT.

Susan Boyle is fast food. Elaine Paige is haute cuisine. Oh, and just because the US isn't hip to Elaine Paige, she is a household name in the UK.

Bettyboy72, not sure where you live. I live in Los Angeles, and have been an Elaine Paige fan for many, many years.

It's very sad that she's not a huge star in the US as she is in the UK. The average person has never heard of her. But, they have heard of Heidi Montag. Very, very sad.

Here is what Elaine Paige said on her facebook about all this ,

"?I was dismayed to read the remarks attributed to me today in the Daily Mail which were incomplete and misinterpreted.

I am a huge supporter of Susan Boyle and admire what she has achieved; she has handled the extraordinary situation of being catapulted to worldwide stardom with tremendous strength, charm and dignity and I thoroughly enjoyed working with her on the ITV special we recorded together only last month.

I have always said it?s very hard for someone to be fast-tracked to stardom without any prior experience ? I know this as it happened to me when ?Evita? opened and I found it extremely difficult in the beginning; today, of course, it?s much harder with the phenomenon of the internet ? Facebook, YouTube etc ? it seems it only takes minutes for fame to spread around the world ? and that?s why I used the word ?virus?! I wasn?t referring to Susan herself; I was referring to the speed of her fame spreading as fast as a worldwide viral marketing campaign.?"

But reprint Daily Mail tabloid tittle tattle, just what The Guardian should be about!!!

Do you honestly think that Elaine Paige is jealous of Susan Boyle?

What am I missing here? Sounds to me like Elaine Page is "right on" with her assessment of the situation and she is graciously telling it like it is. Sometimes when people don't like the honesty they hear, they assume the honesty is actually bitterness or jealousy. How silly.

Patash, I couldn't have said it better myself! Thanks so much for that!

If the quotes attributed to Paige are her actual words, I don't see how any reasonable person could call them "gracious." As for her singing, I personally find her voice to be shrill and very unpleasant, made far worse by her very bizarre vocal styling.

Argh. Once some irresponsible reporter misquotes a person in this day and age, it is impossible to get that genie back in the bottle. I feel sorry for Elaine Paige here. Let that be a lesson - unless you have to talk to the press, don't.

That's all well and good. For people worldwide who aren't into broadway musicals, they never heard of her. Boyle's a household word because of tv and internet, and of course, her voice.

This is another example of the media twisting what someone said into a news story! They do it everyday in politics. Sad thing is; people fall for it! Elaine sang with her for goodness sakes! Do you think she would if she had really thought that negatively of her? Twisted media trying to lead us! Do not give in!

That Groovy Guy, you're right. Elaine Paige has been singing improperly for years. Perhaps you could teach her to sing correctly.

Susan Boyle in an good singer with an extraordinary 'backstory'. Once the novelty of that story wears off, I'm not sure she'll be able to sustain the momentum career-wise. And this story was reported by the Daily Mail - a paper rather than a newspaper...
