So as we all know musical adaptations of movies are HUGE now...
My question is:
If Sondheim wrote a musical adaptation of a movie, what movie would it be? (and why?)
When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

Yup, both PASSION and NIGHT MUSIC. If he were to write another musical adaptation of a movie I'd love for it to be THE HOURS and A SINGLE MAN, both of them based on novels, but I'd prefer it if he used the movies as his main source material, kind of like he did with PASSION.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Sondheim has said in the past that he considered a Groundhog Day musical for a while. Harold Ramis said that James Lapine even contacted him about the idea.
In regards to Little Night Music, which is a good point, I was focusing this question more on the "current/commercial" side that Broadway tends to be heading in (commercial has a negative conotation but it seems like the most accurate word right now)

So what do you want us to say? TWILIGHT? AVATAR? THE HANGOVER?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

If I don't tackle it first, Steve ought to do it with Lapine. Those last 20 minutes or so was one of the most exciting things I've seen on a screen ever. And Michael Cerveris (Yes, I know everyone is sick of him) would make a wonderful Lester. Updated On: 1/24/10 at 02:33 PM
I like the idea of Michael Cerveris as Lester. What about someone like Donna Murphy as Carolyn?

I don't know if this was intended as sarcasm, but I actually could see Sondheim covering Anne Rice's material quite well...purely theoretically. I don't know how well the outcome would be when it would be staged, though.
*sighs* If only he had written Lestat instead of dearest Elton >.>

^ I vote for anything that includes the subtitle Electric Boogaloo.
