PASSING STRANGE Film on Ch 13 (PBS) tonite, NY 9 pm. Yay! |
I just turned this on at like 10 and it's... different. I guess if I caught the beginning it would make sense haha
So far there have been some parts where I have not been able to hear what Daniel Breaker is singing.

Kate, I've been watching from the start and I still have no clue.
(And the sound is TERRIBLE when more than one person is singing.)

I thought the show was great at the theater, it is really a shame it did not last longer. Unfortunately the film version did not capture that greatness and did not do the show justice, (in my opinion).
This is just terrible... Definitely not my cup of tea.

Just watched it and if Stew did that 8 times a week I would expect him to be SKINNY because that was INTENSE!

I got bored and turned off Into the Woods on PBS and I had worshipped the show when I saw it at the beginning of the run.
As much as we clamor for filmed records of these shows we love, they usually blow. They're a nice memento of something you experienced in the real world, but as a stand-alone object, not very good. It's in the magic and the melancholy of live theatre.

Grey Gardens would suck to people who hadn't seen it live. I saw and loved Passing Strange at the Belasco, but now I know not to make somebody who never saw it watch it with me.

I knew next to nothing about this show before watching it tonight. I definitely felt like I would've loved it had I seen it live but it was hard to connect to it on film.
I thought Passing Strange was great. I have the cast CD, but hadn't seen the show in the theatre. What an amazing cast! Great band. I really liked the staging and the design of the show. And the music, of course, was excellent.
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
Missed this last night, but when I saw it in the theater, it was pretty rollicking/energetic, and seemed to expertly re-create the energy of seeing it at the Belasco.
Sat through it at the Belasco, really hated it. Sat through about ten minutes last night, just to see if anything had changed, and NO -- it still sucks.

Found it even more impressive on the small screen than in movie theaters (Where I kept thinking "Damn, that is one SWEATY cast!"). Wonderful to experience the scenes and dialogue that aren't on the CD, like "French Movie" , "Arlington Hill" and the extended church scene.
And it has the finest Broadway score since GREY GARDENS.

When I saw it on Broadway I was blown away. I watched it on pay per view and loved it...and I'm pretty sure I will be buying the dvd.
