That happened about an hour after I got to work, across the street from the Marriott. It was all blocked off with guards everywhere when I walked by later today. Scary.

Oh my god, that is scary. I was approached by a guy trying to sell his CDs while walking past the Marquis a couple weeks ago. I just said a simple "No thanks" and walked on, and then he started asking me where I was from but luckily did not follow me. I hope it was not this man, although there were 2 or 3 other guys with him too.

I never know what to do around these people because no matter what you do they keep bothering you and sometimes seem to get mad if you just ignore them.

That's what Times Square was like in the 70s and 80s.

Well, that and porn.

Thankfully the TKTS booth moved back to it's home, so there weren't as many people in the immediate area as there would have been before.

I heard the gunshots this morning, too, when I was on my way to work. Later, when I passed by the corner was guarded off. It was certainly scary and thankfully no one else was hurt.

My heart does go out to the guy's family though. It's sad...all due to the selling of illegal CDs.

The guy was not shot because he was illegally selling CD's. He was shot because he opened fire on a police officer in the middle of a crowded walkway.

I just read this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/11/nyregion/11midtown.html?_r=1&pagewanted=2

I used to work in Times Square, and while I saw many an odd thing (Over 100 nudists on Bicycles comes to mind), I never saw anything this grave. Truly scary, but fantastic that no civilians were injured in the scuffle. Although, if you read the Times article a Wicked snow globe came close.

And based on what was written on the back of the business card found on his person one could assume killing a cop was exactly what he wanted. If his gun hadn't jammed that may have been what happened. The hand of fate saved those officers today.

Pretend you don't speak English and keep walking. Or if you're with someone and obviously speaking English already, just keep walking and don't acknowledge them. If you don't speak, they'll leave you alone. They'd rather bother someone stupid enough to talk to them. It's the answering back that's their entrance into your space and life at that moment.

If you ignore them from the very beginning and walk with a purpose, you'll be fine. I have yet to have any of them approach me when I've ignored from the start and walked with a purpose. Same for my parents who reek tourist when they're in town.

No eye contact or acknowledgment of them there and they have no reason to get in your space. But if you make eye contact, look hesitant, even acknowledge them when they attempt to approach, of course they're going to keep after you and "get mad" if you ignore them. Updated On: 12/11/09 at 08:04 AM

I was there. I work in the Broadway/New York store on the 45th st. side of the Marriott. Broadway Baby is our sister store, so two of my co-workers were there when the bullet came into the store. It was very tense and scary. It was the first time I distinctly heard actual gun shots. Thank God my friends were not injured, and no one else in the vacinity. Not a good day at all, especially trying to explain to people why they couldn't get to the other stores all day. "I'm so sorry, but someonewas shot out there." Not how I thought I would be spending my day at all. Just so thankful everyone is safe. Shaken, but safe.

I'm somewhat surprised it doesn't happen more often. I recall the 'old days' when there was a distinct sense of danger in mid-town...pre Disney. I was mugged very close to there on my 40th birthday, but they've cleaned the area up so much that I certainly wouldn't let this deter me these days, even with the shooting. Happy Holidays Everybody!

I do just that, but they still call after me after I ignore them. I usually just keep walking quickly, as if I'm in a rush to get somewhere. And if I'm by myself, I sometimes even keep my ipod ear buds on as if I can't hear them at all and don't acknowledge them at all. It's so annoying. It's probably my least favorite thing about the Times Square area.

adamgreer - I obviously know he wasn't shot just for selling illegal CDs, but none of it would have started if he wasn't selling them in the first place.

Don't fool yourself, mywonderwa11. With the weapon and the note, it was clear that if he wasn't selling CDs, it would have been something else. This guy wanted to break the law, eventually get caught, and harm or kill a police officer. The man had a goal.

Mister Matt, you're right. I forgot to include the note on the business card into my assumption. How scary. I, too, use that throughway very often.

I don't understand why there would be this fear of walking around that particular location now. Because there was this shooting, does that mean to you guys that there will now be another in the same area?

That spot is probably the safest place in the city now.
