Me neither. Some people's absolute hatred for it baffles me. If you don't like it, don't watch it!

He's hands down my favorite character!

Isn't his dad the brother-in-law from Yes, Dear? He's the perfect actor for the role of the uberstraight, tough guy dad.

The fact that SNL already did essentially this joke just proves to me how unoriginal Glee can be. It's not that it's bad... I just don't find any of the humor to be that original. All of the jokes have been done by other people... and done better.

Glee is just a fun show. It's not ground-breaking, it's not original, it's just a nice little escape for one hour a week. Don't expect much from it, lie back and enjoy. This kid especially is adorable, what's wrong with seeing him spank himself? Nothing, in my book.

Thousands of people on YouTube did it before SNL did.

Thousands of people on YouTube did it before SNL did.

While that is true, I was referring specifically to the idea of having a man in what is close to the actual costume with women backing him up a la Justin Timberlake on SNL. Yes, of course there have been many many youtube videos like this, but those were people actually trying to show off. This is a spoof, as it was on SNL.

I don't mean to be a Glee stan, but if you watch the video, it's very clear that the joke isn't that someone is parodying Single Ladies. The joke is that the flamboyantly gay kid and his friends are imitating Single Ladies and got caught. Nowhere is there any sense of originality in the idea of someone besides Beyonce dancing her (inherently un-original) routine.

The point is that the cute little gay kid is imitating many, many gay kids before him, and his redneck dad realizes that.

Ugh, Christ. I am aware of that scott68. I am not talking about how it's used in the plot. I was talking about the gimmick. Perhaps spoof was the wrong word, but it is certainly a gimmick that has been used before.

Eris, you're correct the actor playing the dad (Mike O'Malley) is from Yes, Dear. Funny enough (if he is indeed going to play a conservative tough dad role here), he played a goofy cop that came out of the closet and dated a effeminate character on My Name Is Earl.

As regards to the Gimmick, I think it was a smart idea. Single Ladies, while overdone and over imitated, has a following and the implied context fits the character perfectly.

What other music video could he recreate? This one has everything his character would want - costumes, snazzy dance moves, theatricallity. Name another popular music video that would suit his purposes? The only other thing I could think of is recreating an inconic number from a musical but that would be less "now".

Yes, how dare more than one show use the same popular song! That's atrocious!

Seriously, there are plenty of reasons to be down on Glee - the way it can't decide if it's a cartoon or an actual dramedy, its heavy reliance on Hollywood high school stereotypes, the overproduced sound of its musical numbers, the way its protagonist is actually kind of a dick but never gets called out on it - but excoriating it for choosing "Single Ladies" when SNL already has? Really?

One show using a song doesn't mean that song is then off-limits forever. And SNL and Glee aren't remotely identical shows, nor are they trying to use the song in the exact same way. Anyway, anything that gives us more of the supporting cast instead of the single-minded focus on Will, Rachel, and Finn is something I support in that show. Maybe Tina will actually get more than three lines this week.
