I wouldn't sit through it again if they paid me, nor would I call much of it "solid".  It is, however, a major stream of revenue for many and a good introduction / gateway to more sophisticated musicals.

It serves its purpose.

Wonderful news that Lincoln Center is at least planning to reschedule Intimate Apparel and Flying Over Sunset to the fall. Something to hopefully look forward to.

Well if everyone ends up moving their shows to the Fall/closes up shop, we can still have the Tony Awards and give Mary Louise Parker and Adrienne Warren their awards and call it a day.

I think I called it (on some thread, a few months back)- At this point I’d bet my life (which we do anytime we leave our houses these days) that they’re clearly going to just not have the Tonys this year, and instead just do a joint awards ceremony a year from now combining both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. 
 

if the entire spring season basically gets moved to the fall or canceled, then the combined number of shows for these two years will wind up roughly equally the number of shows that had initially been scheduled for this one season. Even if it were possible right now, no wants to have a sad mid-October awards where, for example, “The Lightning Thief” wins Best Score by default, or where there are 3 or 2 nominees in most of the musical acting categories, followed by another fairly anemic awards 7 months after that for shows that opened in the six-month period between November 2020 and April 2021. 
 

The only thing that will make sense, with I imagine most of the spring season being staggered out between this September and next April (if we’re LUCKY, most of the houses will be filled again by this time next year), is obviously to call this year’s awards, like SXSW and Coachella, a casualty of the crisis, and do an amazing 2021 awards that will wind up largely encompassing the shows that had been scheduled for the 2020 awards anyway.

The only issue I have with that line of thinking is the committee already has a memory problem with shows that opened in the Fall versus shows that opened in the spring. I promise you if they decide to do a joint ceremony for these two years, there will not be a single nomination for anything that opened and closed before this pandemic. Voters already seem to glaze over merit; without any financial stake for anything that was open in the fall of 2019, they won't even think about those shows

I'd love to be wrong. But I really, really don't see that happening.

Not true. Shows regularly invite the voters to see them a second time (and believe me, after all this will have the seats available to do so). Obviously that presents a problem for the few shows from this season that will have already closed... but if you think that either a Moulin Rouge (still running) or The Inheritance would (closed) would have that much less of a shot winning an award next spring than they would at an awards ceremony that (with so many of the committees and nominators now out of town till the fall) will now not likely be able to be held much earlier than Halloween ... well, I feel like then those shows probably weren’t going to win anyway.  
 

But there’s a reason the new press release that went out since I wrote this said the Tonys will be “postponed indefinitely” rather than “moved to the fall”.

Note that both productions were described as "starring Sharon Clarke" and "starring Debra Messing"

I am specifically only referring to shows that have closed (The Sound Inside, Slave Play, The Inheritance, Rose Tattoo etc) Obviously shows that open in the fall and remain running by springtime still have financial stake in the awards, as they help them sell tickets to further the life of the show

It's the usual curse with the Tony Awards. If the show plays a fall engagement and doesn't have any financial stake in the awards, it's often shut out. Regardless of the quality of the work. Which is why I'd be in preference to having some sort of ceremony towards the end of the summer to honor the work that really is worthy (Mary Louise Parker's career best, Paul Hilton's stirring work in the Inheritance etc)"

The ACTUAL press release sent out by the Tonys never used the word INDEFINITELY.
It said they will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.

Looking now that it will carry on into summer. I think that pretty well puts the kiss of death on Beetlejuice, Girl From The North Country, America Buffalo, The Minutes,Take Me Out, Plaze suite, Diana, To Kill A Mockingbird, Mrs Doubtfire.

Right now I still think shows like Frozen, Mean Girls, Chicago, Ain’t Too proud, West Side Story, company are more less safe. But if it extends past mid June I would say a lot of these will close too.

I will say for right now the most “safe shows” will be Six, Phantom, Wicked, Hamilton, Aladdin, Come From away

Come fall if they are just starting to open back I think it will be sad skeleton of broadway left. And only a few shows set to open like music man
