Finally, going to see Beetlejuice, next week.

I know that multiple people on here have said that the pyro & effects are not particularly startling. While I do believe those accounts, I still would like to have a sense when those moments come in the show.

I know that there are some pyro blasts in the post-Day O scene (when Beetlejuice crashes the dinner) & the scene where Barbara is getting exorcised. Also, I know there is a partypopper, of sorts, shot off during the Miss Argentina scene.

Are there any other scenes with notable pryo/startling effects?

Thanks

Can someone who's seen A Soldier's Play tell me how many gunshots are used in the production and if they're done with blanks or as a sound effect?

No gunshots in any of those!

The worst gunshots for me were in A Bronx Tale. SO jarring, and even in the worst house seat, it rang in my ears. FYI - I have no sensitivity to gun shots. They just came out of nowhere and were so loud.

I’m not sure if this really counts, but I recently saw Matthew Bournes’ adaption of Swan Lake and there’s actually a gunshot in the show in either act III or IV I think. And there’s also another gun that do not go off in the show. I watched this part in the lobby because I got so nervous about it.

However I asked the usher when to expect it (bless her heart for being so nice about it, she let me in after it happens because she could tell how nervous I got. She said “when you see the black gun come out cover your ears”. The other gun (the Princes’ pistol) doesn’t go off.

The gun that does go off is a blank (although I was told it wasn’t very loud).

Here’s the fight scene that is also on Wikipedia and from what I remember seeing on screen:

When the Prince recognizes the imposter/secret detective at the ball, I believe the Prince pulls out a pistol and threatens to kill his mother. Then he begins to go mad and his girlfriend tries to stop him but the secret detective pulls out a pistol and shoots the girlfriend and kills her.

In case anyone is worried (and considering the Khmer Rouge is a big part of it, it’s understandable), the only gunshots in Cambodian Rock Band are heard in the distance, amongst a lot of other noise. There ARE guns on stage, but they’re not fired. This might not be the case in other productions, but there aren’t any blanks being shot at Signature in NY.

There are some physical things in Cambodian Rock Bank that might make some people uncomfortable.

Yeah, the Russians shoot the fiddler right off of that roof.

So I'm taking this as a no... this is meant to be a serious thread so I think answers like this are generally not helpful.

Not sure if this is a west side story spoiler since it's well known, but just in case I'll put the little box.

I saw the revival a few weeks ago and I don't think this will change in previews, but when Tony gets shot the sound is thunderous. I think the entire orchestra (myself included) physically jumped when he was shot. it was so sudden and ear piercingly loud for no reason. my ear was ringing from how loud and sudden it was. just a heads up if you planned on seeing the revival.

Safe to say that it's a recording then & not a blank? You make it sound like it's louder than a blank could even be.

There's a gunshot (blank) in the 2nd act of "Girl from the North Country."

I'm seeing this tonight, could you give a hint of the moment the gunshot happens? Thanks!

The Headlands

There were two scenes where some loud static is played, but I don't remember what it was preceded with and FWIW I personally didn't find it bothersome.

There's a scene near the end where a character makes a finger gun and it appears almost certain that a gunshot or loud sound will follow. You can relax, as this does not happen.

Putting this in a spoiler tag but it doesn't really need it -

There is an establishing shot of the gun in the opening number but it does not go off. Late in the second act there is a standoff between the wife and another character, she runs off and runs back on with the gun. You'll have enough time to cover your ears, she comes on carrying it straight in front of her and then points it to the ceiling to let off the shot. Single shot, and then back to enjoying the show :)

Since the Theaters are reopening, woo hoo, thought I'd ask if anyone knows of any loud, jarring, unexpected loud noises in UTOPIA, except for the awesome music.

Thanks!

Yes fireworks and the link are issues as well. Read the 2nd person's response where they mention fireworks.

Me too my anxiety gets high too and I hate having to sit on the theater looking like an idiot with my fingers in my ears the whole show. Lol I love the music in Lez Mis but I think the gunshots and canons or whatever is totally unnecessary!!! One of my favorite songs in it is Master of the House. Lol. Also really loved The Phantom of The Opera which I think had some Pyro in it too. Ugh.

I am so beyond grateful for this thread.  I thought I was the only one.  The anxiety of gunshots/fireworks/explosions etc have kept me from enjoying Broadway, and life in general, too many times.  It is not a fun phobia to live with.  Thank you for all of the information.

We're heading to NYC in July this year.....

Are there any loud noises from gunshots/pyro/ etc. in Funny Girl or Paradise Square?  Thank you!
