I'm more excited to see the film in 48fps than I am the film (well, not really but I can't wait to see how crisp and clear it looks)

I hope we see a new trailer before summer ends. A new trailer before 'Dark Knight Rises' would be perfect!

^ Peter Jackson officially announced it today.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling.""

Just checking back in here, and this is the first place I heard it's official.

I know some people feel it may be overkill and a money grab, but I don't think Jackson would ever do anything like that. He's spent the better part of his professional career on these movies and if he says it can be done (and done well) I believe him.

Count me in the happy happy camp.

I'll certainly go, no doubt about that. I just hope he does a better job at expanding and rethinking the material here than he did with KING KONG -- his three hour remake was just plain overlong.

I agree about King Kong. There was a beautiful, thrilling 2 hour movie trapped inside the dragged out Kong that was released (and he even released an extended version to boot)

As far as blindly trusting Jackson .... Lucas and Spielberg have proven with the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, that we should always be weary of these geniuses revisiting their beloved classics.

Granted it's only been 10 years since LotR which works in his favor and even though The Lovely Bones sucked, I blame that mostly on the fact that I don't think anyone could have made a good film out of that book. I'm optimistic about The Hobbit, but not blindly so.

The second film is now been retitled 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'. The third film has now taken the title 'The Hobbit: There and Back Again' and will be released July 18, 2014.

So wait, the third film will be the one with the main Hobbit novel? Or are they just using the title?

This just sounds like all kinds of wrong to me. Granted, I've never been a huge Tolkien fan, though I read them all in jr high, but I enjoyed the movies well enough. I didn't have to read The Hobbit in jr high, because I had had it read to me when I was 5 or 6 years old. And that's my point--Tolkien wrote it much much more as a children's story. Yes, adults can appreciate it, like most good children's novels, but its charm next to the trilogy is that its simpler, and more direct.

Stretching this brief novel into three movies--and then padding it out with other bits of mythology like the nearly unreadable (to me--I'm sure Tolkien fans adore it, and that's fine) Silmarillion and other Middle Earth mythology just seemskinda unbearable to me. The tone of The Hobbit and those other pieces are so completely at odds as well...

An absolutely EPIC new trailer has been released.

I love how they made Gollum look appropriately younger. Also, you can see some of the additional material added dealing with the first indications that Sauron is rising.

OH MY GOD!

Anyone know the run time? I had heard (I think at Comic Con) that even thought they are now 3 films, they will not be 3 hour + epics like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. They could be 2 hours each I suppose.

I was wondering about that too! I don't see how they could make 9+ hours out of the Hobbit, especially since the whole Smaug portion occurs in the second film.

That only leaves the battle of the 5 armies for the last movie. (for the record, although an epic event, it takes up only a page and a half in the book).
I know there is a lot of connective story he's bringing in so it runs right into LOTR, but still....

Ian McKellen almost did return as Gandalf. He joined the film at the very last minute. He explains why here.

WOW! I was thinking 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. I must have read a different book. How they are gonna milk 3 movies out of this is a mystery to me.I still can not wait to see it.

Tolkien had a lot of notes for a connective book(s) he was going to write apart from the Silmillarion. He was going to explain where Gandalf was all the time he was missing from the action in The Hobbit and expound on how Sauron actually came back and built his army.

Jackson has all those notes and is going to adapt them as part of The Hobbit trilogy. It's quite an extensive amount form what Jackson has mentioned.

I'm glad to hear this. Just hope it all makes sense and does not look like they were dragging the books out.
