All I said was original. What got convoluted from there is up to you all. I don't think anyone would call Hamilton or Fun Home to be based on a commercial property the same way Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is.

It seems the pumped all the money into the commercials.

Willy Wonka is an family favorite (never saw the Johnny Depp version) and was curious about this, but wisely held off on it.  Have to admit, after what O'Brien did with Love Never Dies, I wasn't too impressed to see he was directing this.

Too bad... It does seem like they created a set they could easily take on the road, and hope that the name, nostalgia for the film and if they perform on the Tonys, they could get some buzz

Good lord, I had completely forgotten how ugly that original LND production was. Blocked it from my mind.

YES. Amen to that.

I certainly hope a "nothingness musical" doesn't necessarily mean an adaptation, because I'm working on one now and would like to think it has a fresh, quality edge...

Not sure if this has yet been discussed, but there was a Vulture article written about the show a few weeks ago that included this toward the end:

"We do know that the famous Wonka chocolate room, the seemingly idyllic river of molten cocoa we drooled over as kids, will indeed be reimagined for the stage — not a small feat. However tempting, keep the fate of poor Augustus Gloop in mind, and stay seated when you catch the show."

So disappointing, as the expectations here were extremely high.

"Not based on a commercial property" is not the same as an "original musical."

I don't care whether or not a musical is original, or based on a commercial property or not, or even based on something that's even good or not, if the end result is quality.

And there are plenty of lousy original musicals.

The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory promotion has been popping up in my FB feed a lot and there were a number of comments about the show, both people dying to see it and others saying that "it's really awful".  Finally someone mentioned that the people on BroadwayWorld have been discussing it.

Well, today the promotion appeared again but all the comments were gone.  They deleted them.

If Love Never Dies wasn't enough, I would like to remind everyone who was lucky enough to not see the new Sound of Music tour that Jack O'Brien rewrote some of the lyrics to that show. "Something Good" in particular, if memory serves. It was atrocious.

It is my understanding that new songs are being written for the show while in previews. Even if there are new songs, will the show succeed without the extensive flashy sets that most people will be expecting?

I feel that we've been very lucky over the last 20 years when it comes to musicals, why they're have been some stinkers, it's been a 2nd golden age. Back in the 60s through the 80s some many crap musicals made it to Broadway that you've never even heard off that were gone after a handful of performances. Though it does feel lately a lot more crap is making it to Broadway and it sucks especially with ticket prices what they are. But I still find those awful shows very interesting. I do think the movie adaptations have really become very common place and sometimes not up to snuff and are brought in just so there's not an empty theater. No matter what we do crap will still find it's way to Broadway, it is after all a huge business that wants to make money.

So the creative team are writing new songs currently? Maybe they've gotten wind about the negative reception so far.

This show will survive on stupidity.  Tourists will be walking by the theatre and see how beautifully decorated it is and not know any better.  Then they will go in and see a show that is complete crap that doesn't deserve to be on a Broadway stage.

Considering that the previous tenants have been Finding Neverland, Motown, and Addams Family, there's a track record for that at the theatre.

We've got to stop accepting these nothingness musicals and we've got to stop letting them get to broadway.

Flops and bombs are essential to Broadway and have been a part of its history since the beginning.  Trying to stop them is like saying you're going to "stop crime".

I enjoyed that tour!  LOL  Honestly, it was my first time seeing the show on stage and I liked it more than I thought I would.

Right.  Because "the tourists" can't resist shiny objects???  I can just picture Jack and Jill Sixpack from Bumf**k, Iowa strolling by and saying "Oooohhh!!!!  Purrrty!!!  Me go give man in box $200 so me too go inside!!""   Theatre snobs really have to start getting over themselves.

Is the U.K. Tour supposed to be based off this Broadway incarnation or the London version?

I was just looking through the Instagram location for the theatre and came across this gem: https://instagram.com/p/BSlYWSJDKrV/

honestly, it looks like a mess and those oompas most definitely look like chuckie dolls.

Saw the show last night, April 6th. Very disappointing! No better than a High School production. Sets were non existent, lack luster choreography, 1st act dragged. I love Christian Borle, however, I don't think this part has any meat and he knows it! The actress who played Veruca, was a hit. Ryan Sell was excellent. This is not a Broadway production,

HE did that?? I just saw it (so bland), and those new lyrics were truly atrocious.

Thanks for the link to the photo! I did notice a photo of a nice sippy cup with the logo. A good thing - I will need to drink heavily to get through this show. I can't believe the changes from the London production and NOT for the better.

Can you imagine how much poor Christian Borle must have to drink these days?  He can't be immune to the negative reactions so far.  Why oh why is he in this?  I could have spared myself tickets (happily bought them before previews bc of him and no way did I see this disaster coming) and now am stuck going regardless of reviews...
