I thought lifetime achievement awards were given out during the broadcast. Isn't that why they had that Hal Prince montage last year?

The Hal Prince award was in 2006. I was there. The "montage" was not that great. Especially the Phantom portion. And yes, it was during the broadcast. I actually shot an e-mail to the Tony site about not having a tribute to Sondheim. But who knows, they may, during the broadcast say something like "Earlier this evening..." and do a tribute. I still think he should get it during the broadcast on CBS though. Just my thoughts.

Wow, after reading this thread I realized that I have no idea what I would do with myself if I saw Sondheim in person. What do you say to someone you practically worship? Haha. re: Sondheim at SUNDAY tonight
What an amazing experience.

I'll never forget watching him walk into the theater and sit down across the aisle from me. I almost couldn't breath.

It would be my only chance to ever see him so I would definitly approach him for the mere fact he inspires me. To all of you who have seen him I envy you more than I have ever envyed anyone in my life.

I saw him on two seperate occasions at Assassins. It was a sort of build up. Before the show started, I first saw Joe Mantello, then 5 minutes later I saw John Weidman, thinking that it was great to see the book writer and the director at the show at the show.

2 minutes later my friend just stops speaking tells me to "shut up and turn around NOW!"

Sondheim was walking right next to us down the center aisle when the tables were still in Studio 54. None of us could think of anything to say, so we all just gave the "We're not worthy" bows a few times.

He smiled, gave a nod, and said thanks. We didn't say a word until intermission.

He was there again the next time I saw it just talking quietly to Joe Mantello on the side of the theater, and I just didn't have the courage to walk up to him. One of my friends did, and asked for an autograph. He politely said "Well, I don't really sign autographs, but thanks for your support and the kind words." My friends practically fainted after that.

My seats were in the Rear Mezz. JJ

As it was a matinee it was quite easy to move down once the show had begun as the whole first row of the rear mezz was open.

It was necessary considering how little leg room there was! My knees were right against the (wood!) seat back in front of me.
