My son will be seeing this show in a couple of weeks. He's going with his school's play reading club. (I'm so jealous- he gets to see 13 Broadway and off-Broadway shows). Daniel Breaker went to the same performing arts school that my son is attending and his teacher knows him. They're taking him out after the show! Thanks for the review!

HI "DANCIN" - Yes, we Scaryotypes like to hype the show. Yes, we LOVE the show. Yes, we want everyone to see it. However, even I, The TinyMagic can admit it's not for everyone...that being said, most people I've seen walking in with major trepidation and fear, walked out warmed and cozy with enthusiastic feelings! If you can just be patient with allowing yourself 15-20 minutes) to settle into the structure of ACT 1, you might actually get your 25.00 worth, if you're getting the Discount. ACT 2, yes, can be somewhat jarring (for about 10 minutes) during the Berlin Scenes, but I think Jaystarr nailed the purpose of these scenes perfectly. Be brave! Allow yourself to like or not like something. Go in expecting nothing, really.

I am sorry to bump my thread...but I thought I just add this.. my friend WaT posted some questions (I think? ) about PASSING STRANGE on another thread and I thought I'd answer it to my best ability of what I think of the show.

**********

When I tell people I hated it, they asked me what it was about and I always say the same thing "about this guy Stew who goes to Amsterdam to have sex and do drugs." Honestly, I have absolutely no clue what went on when I saw that show...

I especially hated when he was carrying those lights and got intertwined in the wires. Horrific. Made no sense at all (at least not to me).

^^^ WaT- I totally disagree with you on this one. I thought this was one of the best part of the show. Those lights represent his EGO for me...he used to be so focused on it. The Youth in the Berlin scene is the overload phase in his life. The intertwined wines are emotions or his pains for not letting go...I thought of it as his chip on his shoulders that he can't break away! meaning~all his resentments about being streotype... yes~ that's how I see it....he hated himself since from the begining and the only way for him to untangled all these wires that connect to his EGO is to face his self hatred and move on.

thus the lyrics of the song goes....

PAIN.....EGO.....ART!

of course the music will be harsh to people' ears- its supposed to represents his self hatred. Can you imagine all those years of searching? .drugs (LA) sex (Amsterdam) finally being appreciate for one's race (Berlin) ..only to REALIZE that...those were NOT the things that he was looking for?

I think this is the ultimate message of the show- People who are to expected to act a certain way resents that and try to go into a journey of self discovery...only to find out that the best way to be TRUE SELF is to FIRST examine yourself....and only then you could be liberated from all these wires of emotions and finally create ART that is......true to you!

and the only way to finally finish his song...is to face his inner demons that was binding him all these years~his self hatred...

I find it so poetic!

Pain Ego Art is the whole point of the show. It's where Youth's entire journey brings him to and without that scene the show is pointless. It's perfectly staged.
