The special effects and costumes were cheap... very very cheesy.

Sebastian's costume -- a red top hat with fake plastic eyes?

the Transformation -- ariel's body double (which is OBVIOUS) slips out of a piece of fabric.

what do they think? that the entire audience is full of 7 year olds? Well, this isn't the case. It made me feel stupid and the #1 rule of theatre... NEVER make your audience feel stupid (unless it's funny)

thank God Tituss was there to save the show with his marvelous rendition of "Under The Sea" and "Kiss The Girl". Compared to the other Disney musicals, this was a big flop.

I think that Zambello's opera experience made her go with a "simple" approach to all the effects...having them happen just for the sake of moving the plot, and hoping the audience would just accept them as fact and then move on.

Unfortunately, she didn't realize that, while artistic and abstract thinking works great in opera a lot of the time, it fails MISERABLY on Broadway, where people expect realism.

"simple"?

more like impressionistic...

in the original presentations, the fish were symbolic and representational.

I really enjoyed it. I came out of the theater with a smile on my face and can't say that it was a total waste to see. I thought the cast was excellent and extremely talented ans I enjoyed many of the new songs (my favorite being "If Only (Quartet)."

I'd recommend it!

Ya...impressionistic is a better word.

"The problem with the musical as it is currently playing is much of the magic is missing. And it really shouldn't be. The blueprint was there, but no one could a) find it or b) wanted to follow it. There are very few "Disney moments" in this incarnation, and the way they muddies the narrative is a shame. I really wanted to love this show, but it (pun semi intended) left me high and dry."

So well-put, Singingbackup.

I felt the same way about this production. It COULD have been something magical and extraordinary, but it's not even close.

It almost hurts everytime I think of what Julie Taymor's take on Disney's "The Little Mermaid" could have looked and felt like. THAT would have been something to treasure.

I love the movie but would not go back to see this show again. It felt like a show you would see in a theme park. Pretty cheesy. I'd recommend it for extremely young girls. Actors were by and large good, although I thought Norm Lewis' acting was extremely wooden. Sierra Borgess was perfection. I didn't mind the plastic sets and the gaudy costumes as much as most of the posters on this board..thought it showed some originality...but by and large, found most of the production uninspired.

Hmm, some of the changes they did to the show are a little flawed. I nonetheless would recommend if only for the great songs (and yes the new ones accompany the old ones perfectly well, some are a bit forced dramatically but they're tuneful and well written either way).

If you don't expect Sunday in the Park, you may have a good time re: Opinions on the Little Mermaid?
