Firstly-JGallagher is NOT returning. They haven't made an official annoucement as to the replacements for JGroff & Lea. It is highly unlikely that they would take a swing and put them into the lead slots, then have to find NEW swings. Swings are very valuable, esp for this show. But, you never know. As for Blake-DRMAMA is correct, no official annoucement as yet, he is still in negoiations. I for one, would love him to stay. And anyone that hasn't seen the show, should make a point to see it before Groff & Lea leave.
Oops, I meant to write Melchoir, my bad. Thanks for the correction, Steven. I'll edit.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
1) A freshman, from Carnegie Mellon University, was JUST cast (today) as the NEW understudy/standby for Melchior.
2) A sophomore, from The Boston Conservatory, was JUST cast (today) as the NEW understudy/standby for Hanschen
3) Lea's replacement, as Wendla, has NOT been cast. They have narrowed it down to three girls from a final callback (this past weekend) and will be cast within this month.
a good friend of mine attends CCM's program and is always informewd on this type of College Kids Getting Cast nonsense.
They have to replace Matt Doyle's u/s track (which appears to have been broken into two separate tracks) since he's taking over Hanschen.
I doubt very much he'll go on as Melchior very often now, except in emergencies. It would make more sense to put Jesse Swenson on, because if Doyle goes on, Swenson would have to go on as Hanschen anyway.
TOODARNHOT: Right on all counts. Matt Shingledecker has been hired and starts April 29th-He will be the U/S for Melchior and a swing...but he is also auditioning for MELCHIOR as replacement for Groff. In a conversation with JBW: His last day is April 20th-and Matt Doyle has been bumped to replace him. If Matt S. does get the Melchi role, then Matt D. will cont to be the U/S. As for Blake Bashoff: He is still in talks to stay until Sept. That's all I know right now...
The replacement/swing situation for this show is always so confusing...maybe partially since they are largely all the same age, and most of them can play almost any of the roles.
I really liked Swenson as Melchior. But I admit I haven't seen Doyle in the role, although his Hanschen was perfect. I think Doyle is probably the most flexible/talented swing they have right now. Socha was great as Wendla.
I'm really hoping on Alex as Wendla and (rumored) Hunter as Melchior. They would be such a cute pair. As for Blake, I really hope his contract is up on May 18th as well. I didn't care for his Moritz. Not because I miss J.Galls (though I do... VERY much), but because I thought the performance didn't do the part justice.
My vote is for Alex and Hunter. Though I'll be happy with new Matt too since it's always nice to see a new face in the show :)
Blake's contract was only until May 18th-Same as Jon & Lea's extension...but unconfirmed word has it , that he has now re-signed on until Sept. But no "official" word as yet.
Doyle is their most versatile male u/s, which is why I was surprised he got bumped up to Hanschen. Like I said, I doubt he'll go on as Melchior much after he takes over Hanschen. That'll leave Swenson and this new swing as the covers of the role.
Is Swenson taking over Doyle's ensemble track, or will he remain a swing?
Ohhhh if Doyle directed this piece, it would all take place in Moritz' head and Melchior would play the trombone, Wendla could play the violin, and Moritz would play the glockenschpiel.
I have also heard the rumor that Bashoff was staying through the summer...I'm assuming through Labor day weekend. I should have more direct confirmation of this in a week or so.
As to WHY his contract was so short: he had to think about possible filming for LOST. While YES, he knew he was dead already, it wasn't clear whether he would be shooting any flashback scenes once filming resumed...he isn't. (Although there are still possibilities for next season.)
I'm glad he is staying, I simply adore him in the role. (I loved JGalls too...but I truly prefer Blake's Act II to Johnny's.)
I don't necessarily believe the socha rumors. WHY would Kate Burton (of all people) be announcing it? It wouldn't be her place to do so. I think Socha is amazing as Wendla, so I wouldn't be dissapppointed in ANY way if she got it...I'm just saying I think it's all rumors. (I prefer her to Lea in EVERY way.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Bashoff took over mid december; but he was in rehearsal for approx a month before hand...but not a consistent month. So he was on the payroll for 6 months. Right now, it looks like he'll be there thru the summer. (But I am not 100% confident in the source and still treating the info as UNconfirmed.) Now it looks like 9 months, but I doubt he will renew again, but we can hope.
