On Youtube I found Liza doing "Rose's Turn" amd I thought it was amazing, (horrid copy, bootleg I'm sure..don't tell anybody..
I don't know if it's still there, but if you get a chance...
I adore Liza and I would love to see her do it, but it's such a big commitment...not sure it would happen for her...But I'd buy a ticket if it did!
Finished?! We're just beginning and there's no stopping us this time!

... so pay attention: if she can't sing, Kathy Bates can't play Lea DeLaria, BUT Lea DeLaria can play Kathy Bates AND she can sing. ergo, if Bates can PLAY Rose, DeLaria can SING Rose... and is Gypsy a musical, or what?

They're already making a dramatic film for HBO based on Gypsy's memoirs. It's called "Gypsy and Me" and will star Sigourney Weaver (whose also executive producing) as Gypsy Rose Lee.
Martin Sherman (who wrote the book for "The Boy From Oz") is adapting the script from Erik Lee Preminger's book "My G-String Mother: At Home and Backstage With Gypsy Rose Lee".

Posted: 7/16/07 at 12:14amI know I'm jumping into this conversation late, but in the clip I saw of Liza doing "Some People" (maybe from The Leading Ladies concert)she could sing the song, but she looked like she was killing herself while doing it. In my opinon, Rose needs to look like she is never working to be the star until the very end. She needs to be natural in whatever she does. I think Donna Murphy would be phenomenal in a few years.

Ditto on Donna Murphy. I would love to see that. And in the umpteenth revival (far) down the road, Leslie Kritzer as well. I love Victoria Clark but I just can't see that at all. Does she have a strong belt? Same with Christine Ebersole; I can see her doing it, but I just don't feel it.
I know Julie White has done a little singing in the past, though I doubt her voice would be up to task with the demands of this role. I'd just love to see her "Rose's Turn," on a whim. If she has the pipes, that is.

Ms. Rose is THE hard working/kill herself for a break/scrap by on the skin of her gums- stage mother. In Everything's Comming Up Roses Ms. Rose is being terribly unnatural and killing herself and those around her.

I believe Arthur Laurents has the right to veto any actress who wishes to play Rose in any major GYPSY revival which is why LuPone wasn't able to play the role before.
I definitely agree with what he has to say about Liza playing the role.
Clark would probably play role in a style similar to Lansbury's while I see Krakowski being more of a "Peters-esque" Rose in 10-15 years from now.
Murphy is pushing 50 so she is actually the right age to play the role if they wanted her to be closer to the age the real Momma Rose was at the time the show takes place.
I believe Bebe Neuwirth would also make one of the scariest Momma Roses, yet quite exquisite.

Posted: 7/16/07 at 2:32amALthough I have never seen Ethel Merman play "Rose", I saw Bernadette Peters on Broadway, Betty Buckley at the Papermill, and all the movies. Patti LuPone is the ultimate Rose!!! I can't imagine a better choice. I like Liza, but I do not think that she can handle that role vocally nor would she be as tough as Patti portraying Rose. I think that Christine Ebersole would be my choice if they recast the role again.

Posted: 7/16/07 at 2:51amWhy me of course honey! Other than being a famous Tony award-winning Broadway star I have a lot in common with the divine Ms. Lupone! LOL Let's see, I'm vertically challenged, at the most 5'3"-5'4" in shoes, 50 years old but can play ten years younger at least, and I've done the roles of Eva Peron and Mrs. Lovett, just to name 2 of the 30 or so roles I've done. I have a 3 octave range, low D-high D, basically I'm the universally famous soprano w/belt, which is good cause that incredible score was written for La Merman and it's a high belt. Seriously, I think the role of Rose should be put to bed for a few years until the memory of Patti Lupone's performance isn't so fresh! How does anyone follow that???!!! I only wish it was running longer or it was being filmed.

Victoria Clark could do it very well. Ditto Christine Ebersole.
Those two women are the same age as Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone who have both played the role (one currently is, in fact).
I'd like to see either one of them tackle the role because I think they'd be really amazing. I think Ebersole might bring out the vulnerable, human side of Rose really well. (I tend to think Rose had to be really insecure to do the things she did.) And yes, Christine Ebersole does have the pipes for the role. She'd be amazing.
