Wow, where have we talked about THIS before? Yes, straight + loves theater = must be gay. That's how closed-circuited - uh, closed minded people think, right?

Great story about the straight guy/hot girl ratio in theater.

I Narrated Rocky Horror for a few years around Halloween and every year I'd do some radio spots and what not to hype the show. One year one of the local DJ's from the hard rock station came down to the theater to do a live feed and I was sent out to chat him up. He instantly noted that I was 'much more hetero' than he thought I'd be, which we both laughed about. As the audience and cast started mingling in the house he noticed that not only was most of the audience under-dressed and over-sexed college girls, but so were all the dancers in the ensemble. And they all stopped by to talk to me.

'So this is like your secret stash of hotties,' he said, to which I grinned from ear to ear.

'I knew I should have stuck with theater,' he lamented.

Meh. People are closed minded.

WalkOn & JohnPopa, that reminds me-
You know, in high school, my cousin and I were pretty close so he would always ask me "girl questions". He wanted advice on how to meet girls and/or get a girlfriend. I always told him he should go out for his school's musical productions. I tried many, many times to convince him that the male/female ratio is well in his favor. He never listened to me.

And actresses/dancers are big pushovers--don't forget that--a fragile ego combined with a need to please...it's like THE WAGES OF FEAR--THE MUSICAL!

way, way back in my Army days, I had the role of Mordred in the Karlsruhe Army theater Center production of Camelot.....the theater center director, Frank, was a good friend, and not shy about letting anyone know he was gay.....while I was just 21, an MP in the Army, and and knew if my sexuality came out I could be kicked out.

So, the director of the play one day got so frustrated with me during the Seven Deadly Sins number that he yelled out 'Scott, will you please, PLEASE act nelly!!!!!'

and way in the back of the theater came Franks voice, very hi-pitched screaming...'Oh HE should NOT have a problem with that!!!!!'

I turned beet red, started giggling, and had no further problem with the role.

not sure why, but this thread made me think of that.....

Wickedrentq, you beat me! anyone else? There are a lot of jerks out there who hold fast to the stereotype. I was at a party last week and then went to Marie's Crisis along with this complete jerk. He must have repeated the lines "I love musicals but I swear I am straight" at least 10 times to me.

Answering your question lildogs, I actually find it a big turn on. If I had a dollar for every time I gotten this response from a guy, "uh well I saw the film version of Rent, that was cool".

Well, lildogs the person in question is not a musical lover like me or any one else on this board. He's one of those sad, no life, obsessed with sports guys who memorize all these trivial facts about certain teams like the Mets and talks about things in regards to the Mets from like ten years ago.

Besides that, I've always had this feeling that he is gay. He calls me gay and all this, when in fact he seems like he'll turn up at our 10 year high school reunion with his boyfriend or something like that. Just to say, this was not meant to offend anyone, I would never intend to do so, this was just me, saying something about someone who called me Broadway F**. He used to be such a nice guy, but the last years of high school, he turned into such an a**

WOW! Thanks for digging up a twelve year-old thread.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Sumofallthings said: "I'm a straight man who loves musical theatre and I'm currently majoring in Theatre at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (I'll be in the first regional production of Urinetown in the spring!) and I have to say it's really just part of the territory.

People may think I'm gay but they aren't vocal about it, I think, especially in Madison, people are more accepting of other people. I am not particularly effeminate but I do have a six foot tall Dreamgirls poster in my room.

The strangest thing about it is getting hit on by gay men and then breaking the news to them. I usually pull an "I'm flattered, but no thanks." However, if Stephen Sondheim started hitting on me I could suspend my heterosexuality for a little bit.

"

That's like saying....'I'm not gay but $20. is  $20,'.

Straight, in MT. It is not the shag-fest you’d expect (or maybe the shag-fest that it is if you’re gay in MT, if the gossip here on the boards is true).

The girls are usually dating lawyers or investment bankers or some such, and the guys are dating people they know from the audience or from the outside.

The concept of straight men being the unicorns of musical theatre is probably the gayest thing in the history of gayest things on earth.

You mean guys like Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Jule Styne, Harold Rome, Burt Bacharach, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, Alan Jay Lerner, Frederic Loewe, Cy Colman, Marvin Hamlisch, Andrew Lloyd Webber,  Lin Manuel Miranda, Robert Lopez, Boulbil and Schonberg?

I'm also really glad these straight guys love musical theatre.

There'd be a whole lot less musical theatre to love without them.

There is common misconception that straight men can't or don't love musical theaters. Most of Broadway's leading men are straight males, with such a love for musicals, it's pretty great. Also, Benj Pasek is gay.
