You notice how Hugh Jackman stars for a solid year in a show where he sings an entire score that calls for him to bleet to his happy heart's content and the next year the world is struck by rampant natural disasters? Hand of God my ace.

Ah, well, what I was saying was that "Being Alive" is the most didactic song in the show but I guess I can see how you would dislike those songs. Do you like either Follies or Anyone Can Whistle?

Rath, I respect your opinion of course, but I disagree very much. The score from this show is so unique. I think people tend to see it as too dark or too cynical, but it's so honest. A show that includes Another Hundred People, Company, You Could Drive A Person Crazy, Being Alive, (Not)Getting Married, Little Things You Do Together and The Ladies Who Lunch has to be one of the best shows in the history of musical theater. I believe Company is among the top 10 or 15 best scores.
Patti LuPone is mind-blowing as Mrs.Lovett but please not Joanne.

Except for the two songs I mentioned, I really can't stand the score. That's the last time I'll say it.

And yes, I like - in some cases, even worship - every other Sondheim score.

I was just curious because I find those (And Merrily) scores remind me most of Company, although he isn't quoting himself and Follies has a lot of pastiche in it so it's not like you couldn't dislike one and enjoy the other.

The reason I'm intrigued that you don't like it is because you have an opinion that's worth hearing. Usually when people dislike a Sondheim show the reasons are a little banal, but I remember there was a thread on Merrily We Roll Along recently that produced some really good opinions. I'm kind of a tool, I love/like/tolerate him pretty much without exception. I can't really think of a song I've been so moved by that I would hate it.

But sometimes folks just don't like something I gis.

I can see why some people dislike it musically (the incessant female choruses in particular take a good bit of getting used to), but I love that the witty, somewhat cynical lyris are put to such upbeat music in most of the songs.

I do love Company, but I have to agree with Rath: It is definitely Sondheim's most formulaic and repetitive score.

When I was in college my professors never let me put on Company because they said college audiences could never deal with the "Bobby baby, Robby, Robert angel" etc, most people (college or not) can't stand the chorus. Personally, I think it's very Brechtian and very unique to the show but I can see why someone would be annoyed by it. The score itself is too perfect, I think. Although the books fails to make Being Alive as powerful as it should be in the context of the show.

I agree that the Patti, Michael, and Audra trio is getting old.

But I wouldn't mind hearing what LuPone would do with Ladies Who Lunch..

First of all - Hooray!!
Second - Yes, Patti will probably be Joanne and will be wonderful and steal the show without trying. Her "Ladies Who Lunch" will be stuff of legend. Get over it.
Third - I bet they will record it somehow (whether for CD or DVD/PBS). The other musicals at the Phil have all been recorded in some manner.
Fourth - When I first heard of this, I too thought that they should go for Hugh Jackman for Bobby. He is perfect for it, because EVERYONE in the theatre would to either be him or do him. Bobby needs to have that charisma or else why would these friends of his stay involved with someone so disconnected.

I think it would be terrific if they took some of the revival cast and the Kennedy Center cast to fill this out, i.e.
Alice Ripley (Amy- Not Getting Married)
Jane Krakowski (April - Barcelona)
Heck, they could even bring back Pam Myers to do "Another Hundred People."

This does seem an odd choice for the Phil to do, but I'm SO glad they are doing it.

John Barrowman was a knockout as Bobby in the Kennedy Center production a few years ago. I'd love to see and hear him again

I think John Barrowman may be cast as Bobby. Stephen Sondheim reportedly thought his version was wonderful.

I agree, Barrowman was really first rate. I adore this show, so I can't wait.

I didn't care for Barrowman's interpretation. I'd still love to see Michael Rupert's take on the role, although he's a bit long in the tooth for it now.

I think either Malcolm Gets or Jason Danieley would be great Bobbys. Alix Korey is my first choice for Joanne.

I actually have a hunch it will be Raul Esparza if its not a big name like Hugh Jackman.

I would absolutely kill myself if they have LuPone as Joanne.

I would LOVE to see Ana Gasteyer as Amy. I can just imagine her singing "Not Getting Married Today" althoug I don't think anyone can compare to Madeline Kahn's performance of that song. Too bad she is not around anymore re: Sondheim's COMPANY @ NY Philharmonic in 2007

If Raúl's performance is well-recieved in Cincinnati, I hope he would get to do this, too, even if he doesn't seem like one to do the same project twice.

Well, the thing about Lonny Price is that he likes to use big name Broadway and opera stars. So do you know anyone from opera who can play Bobby?

Hmm I don't know if I'd say Lonny Price has a penchant for using Opera Singers. With the exception of the SWEENEY TOOD at NYPO, which was conceived as a joint venture featuring Broadway/Opera talent, I'm not familiar with him casting any stars from the opera world in his various Sondheim concerts...

While Price used Timothy Nolen in the Sweeney concert and Thomas Allen, Paul Groves and Stanford Olsen in the Candide concert, both those works straddle the border between operetta and music theatre, so casting those kinds of voices made sense. Company is purely a work of musical comedy, so I'm pretty sure Price will be sticking to Broadway talent.
