Eliza Doolittle
Mama Rose

"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."

1. Mama Rose (Gypsy); no contest, really
2. Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd)
3. Nellie Forbush (South Pacific)
4. Sally Bowles (Cabaret)
5. Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady)

Roninjoey, I'm not sure if you're kidding, honestly. I mean, you can have your opinions on Wicked (and I'll try not to go into an anti-Wicked rant), but saying Elphaba is near the watermark of Mama Rose, let alone better, is like saying that Captn. Jack Sparrow is a better character than Michael Corleone. It's not too bad, especially next to most other recent shows, but it's really not even close.

Musicals- in no particular order

Effie White (Dreamgirls)
Mother (Ragtime)
The Witch (ITW)
Baker's Wife (ITW)
Eva Peron (Evita)
Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney)
Roxie (Chicago)
Eliza (MFL)

I don't see plays all that often but I'd say Amanda in Glass Menagerie is a brilliant role also the young female role in Vieux Carre is absolutely wonderful
Catherine (Proof)

Cheers,

C.

I'm so unoriginal, but who can deny the greats? Mama Rose
and Mrs Lovett. No contest.

As for plays, I'm not too familiar with plays that have been on the Broadway stage, but I have to say that Sister Aloysius from "Doubt" is an AMAZING character, and a fabulous role for women.

I agree with everyone's additions. And -

Elphaba - I know people will hit me but I think this is one of the best roles to come along in a while. Great character and one of the most vocally ranged roles in a musical. Along with Glinda, I guess, but this is what I thought of first. Believe it or not, Idina had the best shot at the role. She should start off idealistic but naiive. In the end she is withered and broken...till the surprise ending. Good acting role too.

I'm not saying its the best one, but certainly deserves to be among the others here.

Mama Rose gets my vote along with a role I am surprised no one has mentioned yet, Dolly Levi.

If we are also considering plays then I add Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams to the list.

I can’t believe this wasn't mentioned yet but clearly Caroline Thibodeaux from Caroline, Or Change. The best female character ever written with the best tour de force eleven o'clock number ever written, Lot's Wife! Of course brilliantly brought to life and fully realized by Tonya Pinkins.

Why would I kid? I have to concede to popular opinion and admit that Elphaba is clearly the greatest character to walk the stage. Maybe someday Idina Menzel will play Lady Macbeth but to be honest I think it will be a step down for her.

I'm usually too busy doing the lotto for Wicked to go see plays but I did go see this one called Cat on a Hot Tin Ceiling or something and I thought that Maggie the cat chick was cool.
