Well, even though I think it would be savvy of her to never do the part so that people would only be able to rhapsodize about what a legendary performance she would have given, this seems like one of the best and safest places for her to play the part -- the Chicago Symphony should sound fantastic and with only three performances she won't have to worry about hurting her voice or trying to fiill a big Broadway house night after night.
This is really thrilling. Patti's Rose may very well be the best ever. She will act it better than Merman and sing it better than Russell or Daly and get more laughs than Betty Buckley. Her sheer animal ferocity may be even more dramatic than Lansbury's shrewdness or Peters's charm.
<------ (Remember though that Dolores Gray always maintained that she was the "ONLY one who understood the PSYCHOLOGY" of Rose.)
So what are the chances Arthur Laurents will swallow his pride (HA!) and fly to Chicago and say to Sondheim--and Patti!--"You were right and I was wrong"?
It's totally easy to get there, Mutts. I found it and that in itself is a small miracle. Get on the Metra that goes right to Ravinia and you're good to go. I can't wait until next summer!
It's a shame that Laurents apparently has a personal grudge against LuPone which apparently has nothing to do with her talents. Isn't he abusing his privilege in a way?

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Laurents has long enjoyed his reputation as the biggest bitch on Broadway. But he and Sondheim haven't been on speaking terms for a while, which is a shame. It would be nice if Arthur had an Ebenezer Scrooge moment over Patti's Rose, kissed and made up with with Sondheim.
Wow. VERY excited about this! I think this is the perfect opportunity for Patti to do this role. I may even have to plan a trip to Chicago for this...
"Wherever you go... I'll be right there. When you get your own private kick in the ass, just remember: it's a present from me to you."
Rose's dying words to Louise
I was wondering about that comment. I remembering reading of some rift during the Rudin thing, but I thought people saw Sondheim and Laurents drinking or dining together when Gypsy was in previews.
I can't wait to see this! It's going to be amazing.

Hooray for living 1 block from Ravinia Festival ! I cannot wait for this to happen. Unfortunately, to everyone who has been asking about a recording, there most likely will not be a recording, since Ravinia recorded one out of all of the Sondheim shows it's done, which was the first: Sweeney Todd. I've wanted to find a copy of it, but they seem to be nowhere around anymore. Guess they were all snapped up. But since then, no other recordings have been made, so in all likelihood, unfortunately, they won't record this one, either.
Ravinia Festival hasn't ever taken place in New York, it's an outdoor concert hall with a really big lawn in the northern suburbs of Chicago. It begins shows at the start of each summer, and ends in early/mid-September. It usually has music concerts, varying from pop to R & B to classical. It also has had other types of performances, including readings of operas, premieres of new works by modern composers, dance concerts at varying locations in the northern Chicago area, and also "evenings with..." where usually a well-known performer comes to their indoor theater (at another part of the lawn) and basically does an interactive "solo show" of sorts. They also have master classes at a learning center, which also at the park. And of course, they have the Sondheim series, which thankfully is still continuing. Unfortunately for non-Chicagoans, their productions have never transferred anywhere else outside of Ravinia Festival itself and other locations it uses in the Chicago area. That's a general summary of what it is. Website: http://www.ravinia.org
Isabella, you might be thinking of the Lincoln Center concerts which are Telivised and also in NYC. This is where the recent production of Passion with Michael and Patti took place.
Passion was first offered at Ravinia. The televised version came Lincoln Center. Same director, same Stars.
I'll join in the game:
Hello Dolly: Dolly - LuPone - I'd love to see this as much as her Mama Rose Horace - Cerveris (Maybe Herman could write the character a decent song!) Irene - Audra (Oh, what lovely ribbons down her back those would be!)
