The Grammar Thread (updated) |
It was Liam's humor. "Eggzampull" would have worked better.
I found the need to amend the original post. Feel free to refer back to this thread if you are unsure which word to use.

MisterMatt, it's just too bad these lovely examples will never sink into the minds of those who so desperately need them.

Updated On: 9/19/04 at 08:49 PMUnfortunately, I saw the need for yet another amendment. Wasn't this covered in fifth grade?

You're doing fine Liam. I can read your messages without any problem.
Mr. Matt and others - For right now Liam is spelling his words phonetically. (Which happens to be exactly what he said in his note!)
You keep on posting Liam. The more you write the easier it will be for you. Your messages are intelligent and well thought out. I'm sure that with the classes you're taking the spelling will just get better and better!
(I'm sorry that it looks like this message was written by a dog!)

More people are in need of this thread. So, Bump.

Off-topic, but every time I see the title of this thread, a little voice sings in my head "I'm a little depressed by the tired, old face that I see..."
"My grammar and punctuation are fabulous, when I'm not getting carried away flaming shills for Brooklyn and Wicked."
Sorry Tiff. It was too much to bear!
The real question is whether it's Brooklyn, BRKLYN, BKLYN, or any other jumble of letters...

Gramatically correct bump.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
It's time for another bump. This place is getting ridiculous.

I think this thread should be bumped the first of every month. Few things detract from content as much as a glaringly misued form of a word. You can pooh pooh the concept and you can argue that it's not true, but in the end, it still undermines what your are trying to say to at least a significant portion of your audience.

Perhaps the second of every month? April Fools' Day is coming up...
One of my biggest pet peeves is when people say that they "could care less." The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less." To say the former completely defeats the purpose of what you were originally trying to say in the first place.
*shudder*
*shudder*
"Y'all have a GRAND day now"
Another pet peeve is people who misuse affect and effect. They're not interchangeable.

I say I could care less. Because I could, but it would be hard to achieve.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.
i know what you mean, princeton, about people messing up sayings. but, thanks to this thread, some of the people on the board have made a complete 360 when it comes to their grammar.

love this thread!
I always think of bad grammar as a pet peeve, therefore making it less legitimate, like littering, spitting, etc.
Two of my very off topic favorites are "safety deposit box" and valentimes day...but my VERY fave is "could care less."
What is worse is that you cannot convince people that they are incorrect about these.
Thanks, Matt, for posting this in the first place and all those who bumped!
