I have no doubt that Bulldog is correct. I actually collect SHOWBOAT recordings and own twelve. I know of about 5 or 6 more. On the other hand, PORGY & BESS has dozens. Just look at all the entries you'll find at amazon under both popular music and classical music.

Please don't think I mean to recommend Amazon as the definitive source! However, it is one of many places where just the sheer number of listings for PORGY seems to support Bulldog's assertion.

Not that I doubt you for a second, Bulldog, but where in the world did you find this little bit of trivia? What are your resorces? They amaze me.

PEACE.

sorry BroadwayBulldog, but it simply doesn't make sense.

why are you unable to tell us your source material for the most recorded score???

it is very unlikely the most recorded score is NOT Showboat, sorry.

Come on, you can tell us where you get your information for these quizzes. Where do you get your information for these quizzes?

PORGY AND BESS and SHOW BOAT, two of my all-time favorites.

I don't intend to be mysterious, but then again if I divulged sources you would all be ansering the puzzlers as speedily and correctly as Magruder. LOL

But, for those of you who are convinced SHOW BOAT leads, here is some data.

Acccording to Amazaon.com: PORGY has 57 recordings (some of these are musical suites, so knock off a dozen, that's 45). SHOW BOAT has 22 recordings.

According to All Music Guide (allmusic.com) PORGY has 29 different recordings, while SHOW BOAT has 24.

According to the "Official Price Guide: Movie/TV Soundtracks and Original Cast Albums" PORGY has 19 different recordings, and SHOW BOAT has 13.

The primary reason for the difference are the many jazz & vocal versions of PORGY, and that's not counting the musical suites performed by numerous orchestras.

What I can say? I didn't make this up.

Yours for a better Broadway!

The current PORGY AND BESS thread reminded me of this one. The most frequently recorded score according to our own Jose'/Bulldog.

I missed this thread the first time around, but had I seen it I definitely would have guessed Porgy & Bess. When I was an undergrad music student I became obsessed with the show as a freshman and I remember that our music library had over 30 different recordings of the score (some complete, some abridged, some just highlight collections, some jazz reinterpretations, some in different languages) -- I listened to every single one. All the different takes on the score, all the different tempos -- I couldn't get enough. Because the show is such a landmark for musical theatre AND Broadway AND jazz, it seems that everybody in the last 70 years as wanted to take a crack at it.
