Melissa is a good idea. And I think there are some CHICAGO alums, some KISS ME KATE Lois alums, and some others in town who could do a fine job with CALL FROM THE VATICAN. Or perhaps whoever has been standing by for Cady Huffman all this time. The original revival Lois, Amy Spengler, has even done the CHICAGO lead. But I wonder if they will want more TV/movie names like they got with Jane and MSM.

I definately think that Caroline O' Conner would work very, very well. I don't think that Judy would be right for Luisa.

re: Hmm..

Any more ideas for Clara? Really BillyLawlor- no Judy? But she's such a great actress with a wonderful voice. She was excellent as Fosca last year at the Sondheim Celebration, and she can definetely sing the part. She even looks similar to Mary Stuart Masterson. Maybe it's just me. Why don't you think she would work?

re: Hmm..

What about Lauren Kennedy for Clara? We know she could probably sing it...but does she have the sexy quality Jane has.

Lauren for Carla?? LOL! (Flae, why does it scare me that someone mentioned the 'other Daisy' for Carla? That hits a little too close to home... ah, Thighs!)

Actually, I think Lauren would prolly be a good choice. She could definitely sing the hell out of Vatican and Simple. We ALL have our inner whores... I'm sure she can find it. :)

I guess your right. She may be a little to "innocent" for the part, even if she can sing the role. I wonder if Denise Faye or Lauren Zimmerman (both from the original Chicago cast) can sing well enough to carry that role. They definetely look the part. Updated On: 6/16/03 at 04:11 PM

OOoh! I messed up the characters. I'm a little shaky on the names. I think that Judy Kuhn would be perfect to replace Mary Stuart Masterson. I thought you meant she would replace Krakowski! Now, THAT would be something. Judy in a white sheet singing "Call From the Vatican". Here's another question: What ages do you think Nine is good for? How young should an audience member be, in your opnion? It many be a litte bit boring for certain people. What do you think?

Nine is a serious show. I'm not sure what to tell you. It's one of those shows that you have to understand completely and really aprecciate the brilliance of Yeston's score. I would never have liked it when I was younger. It wasn't until college that I really started to fall in love with Sondheim, Yeston, and the like. I'm not sure what to tell you. Although it's definetely not for anyone in elementary school. It's an adult show. I mean Call to Vatican was supposed to be done on the Tonys when Nine first came out but it was cut out of the program right before it aired because it was said to be too racey. And in this show Krakowski wears even less clothes than Anita Morris.

Caroline O'Connor for Lilliane. How about Nicole Kidman for Claudia?

Don't underestimate the 'innocent' looking ones. Everyone thought *I* was all innocent looking until I sang the song for final demo and I shocked them all... seriously shocked 'em. I actually think Lauren could do it, I don't know if she has enough star power though. I think they're going to want to replace the names with other names... even if not FILM/TV actors, at least bigger Broadway names. Who knows, though?

Alice has gotten a little bigger lately. I don't know if I'd care to see her in a sheet anymore. Now maybe in her Side Show days...

Alice has gotten "a little bigger"? She doesn't look all that different to me.

musicaltheatreman, have you heard The Maury Yeston Songbook where Alice sings 'A Call From the Vatican'? If not, you must. You'll change your opinion pretty quickly, I think.

I wish I could find a picture of her in Tell Me On a Sunday. She certainly wasn't "fat" but she isn't exactly Carla material. But even in the pictures of Little Shop it looks as if she has put on some weight. I'm not trying to get into an issue with someone over weight. Alice Ripley is a very beautiful woman, but she isn't any Jane Krakowski.

I'm confused why Alice wasn't aloud to belt the crap outta "Cal from the Vatican"??? when i heard that she was singing that I was ready to be blown outta the car (I listen to cds in my car) but then i heard reviews where she's breathy and what not??? What are musical directors doing to Alice?? she's one of the greatest broadway belters there is now. how can they hold her back, I'm so sad.

I'm also surprised that in all these years she hasn't played Amneris in AIDA...?

I've seen Alice Live 3 times, she's amazing.

She really isn't that great of a belter. Her voice has always been a little weak, in my opinion. She belts when she feels like belting, I don't think it has anything to do with a music director. And her belt in my opinion doesn't have all that much power behind it. Her belt in "Tell Me on A Sunday" this past year was EXTREMELY weak. She would build and build and then nothing would come out. It was pretty disappointing. She belts in Call to the Vatican though. The main problem with her in that song is that she changes all the rythms. I for one didn't think she was horrible on the CD.

No it has to be the musical director. Alice Ripley doesn't belt?? I have, I think ALL, of her cds, and she tears it up on the solo cds with Emily. Listen to "She's Gone" "Losing Track of Time" "Enough is Enough" "Unsuspecting Hearts"

in Side Show the infamous "Where is miiiiine?" in "Tunnel of Love" "I Will Never Leave You" "Who Will Love Me As I Am?" etc

and dont forget "Celebrate" from the Elegies cd. Alice tears it up.

I am a HUGE belter fan. I love it when people sing things that us mear humans can only dream of, lol, Alice is in line with my favs, Patti Lupone, Jennifer Holliday, Linda Eder, etc.

I agree that Alice isn't sexy enough to play Carla in Nine, but you're not the first person to tell me she doesn't belt. I've seen her live three times, and she BELTS, lol. I've seen Linda Eder and Patti and that's why I love their belts as well.

i would have to agree with robactorguy, alice does belt. i have both cds of her with emily and she belts like crazy!! i read something that siad the musical directors want the songs to sung a certain way so sometime she can not sing them the way she wants. she also said that in side show she had alot of say in how she could sing in the show there for she was aloud to belt liek she does in that show.

I LOVE Amy Spanger. She is so amazing. But there's something about her in the role of Carla that doesnt fit for me. By the way everyone- I'm now a stand-by! (Just thought I'd add that in)
