I can understand what you're saying. I think Peter's voice probably got lower as it got more powerful in recent years. He can definitely still hit those high tenor notes though *remembers "speranza" in La Boheme* Thanks for responding!
Does anyone know if Peter has gone on as André yet? I've seen several people say they saw him as Raoul, but so far I haven't seen anything about André. Although I suppose that one's a more minor role.
Wow. That was a bit immature, Musetta. I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised though. *shakes head*
It's so great to be hearing all these wonderful things about Peter's performances as Raoul. I'd love to see him in the role. And yeah, I'm with you on the "speranza" thing, bwaybabe85.
I have to say, initially I was not a Raoul fan. And it's true, he IS a lesser character than Erik. But I disagree about him being a "pansy." After all, here's this young aristocrat whose parents die and who has to be raised by his much older brother. He then proceeds to fall in love with an opera singer, which I imagine was looked down upon at the time. Then he has to deal with the woman he loves being obsessed with an "Angel of Music" who turns out to be a disfigured, rather frightening fellow who happens to show up at his window late at night while he's dressing. Not to mention the whole torture chamber incident. Of course those last few things are going by the book and not the musical, but still... Raoul's a good guy, lol. So it would be great to see Peter portray Raoul as he did Marius in Les Mis...integral, strong, and true to the book.
Peter is listed in Playbill under 'cast of characters' as "Hairdresser ("Il Muto")/Marksman"....there was a 'seperate' notice in Playbill at the Wednesday 10th March matinee, (the performance we attended), that the role of Raoul was being played by Peter Lockyer at that particular performance.
Last Wednesday is the only time I have seen the production, so far, therefore it's the only performance I can address. I hope to see it a few more times before it leaves Chicago in early May.
To LaigleL...it's true, the role of the character of Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, has only been discussed, so far, as Raoul appears in the musical.
The character of Raoul has not yet been discussed as he appears in the book.
There is a curious paradox that no one can explain;
Who understands the secret of the reaping of the grain,
Who understands why spring is born out of winter's laboring pain,
Or why we all must die a bit before we grow again.

Also meant to mention that according to Playbill, Peter Lockyer is the understudy for Monsieur Andre, and Ubaldo Piangi in addition to being the understudy for Raoul!
Peter, it seems, is very busy...as well as very talented.
I'll be back if I think of anything else.

OOOOOkay, since I noticed people around here seem to hear things pretty early . . .
I was just on the official Phantom site and was looking for tour dates for later in the year because one of my local papers printed it was coming within 20 minutes of me around Christmastime. I looked at the tour cast page - and THERE WAS NO RAOUL LISTED!
Now, does any one know if maybe there's a cast change coming? Contract in negotiation? ANYTHING? HEEEEEELLLLPPPPP! And if Tim Martin Gleason *IS* leaving Phantom (which I'm kinda hoping DOESN'T happen until *AFTER* the tour comes back my way one more time) does ANYONE know what he's doing next?
Hmm? A wee bit confused. I just checked the national tour comings and goings page, and it hasn't been updated since January 19th. It still has Tim Martin Gleason listed as Raoul.
The webmaster(s) over there are notorious for not double checking. For about a month, I believe the London cast of Les Miz had two Valjeans and two Eponines.

I'll cross my fingers that's all it is . . . it's just when I saw that I got a very bad feeling about it. Hopefully, his bio returns soon! Or there is some news.
ohhh, that tour page. I was looking at the other one, y'know, the one with the whole cast listed. Well, we'll have to see what happens with this! how long was TMG's picture missing?

I'm not quite sure, Bwaybabe. I only just noticed the other day after seeing that blurb in my paper. I hadn't realized Phantom was coming back to Florida QUITE that soon lol, thought I had another six months or so . . . so it was REAL good news, but . . . then the pic was gone, and after all, TMG *IS* my favorite Raoul (Peter Lockyer isn't very far behind, I *LOVED the way he and Tim played together when Tim was the Phantom!*)
Course . . . I still kick myself for not finding out what I needed to settle that bet while he was in Orlando with Phantom a few months ago!
Any other reviews?? The big day is Sunday...I'm seeing it for the first time! Is there anything interesting to keep my eye on during the show? thanks!

I saw the show the last week in March and was favorably impressed. I liked Gary Mauer's voice, and his acting emphasized the romantic more than the "crazed, violent" aspects, which suited me. The rest of the cast gave a fine, energetic performance---no sign that I could see of "Tour Weariness."
Anything interesting to keep your eye on? You might try to see how they make the Red Death disappear at the end of "Masquerade." I know how they do it, and I couldn't see it done.
Take a second to look at the ballet girls practicing in the background duriing the scene in Christine's dressing room (like a Degas painting), and watch for the Phantom in Christine's mirror.
Thanks sally! I did keep my eye on it! Alright here's my little review of it: I saw the poto tour in chicago on the Easter matinee. I was really excited to see it because it was my first time. So getting to the point, i LOVED Rebecca Pitcher's (Christine) voice, it was awesome. At first i thought Gary Mauer's (phantom) voice was too deep for the role. But as the show went on, it started to grow on me and i loved it. However, I did not like Tim Martin Gleason's (raoul) voice....there was something about it that i coulndt put my finger on. His notes didn't come out smoothly. When the chandalier falls in act 1, i was anticipating a big crash or something. Instead i got a glide down onto the stage and no sound. It completely reuined the effect for me. The lack of sound effects in the whole show almost reuined it for me. The sets (especially for a touring production) were awesome. I also liked the lighting and admired the costumes. I saw the show with my parents who had already seen it a few years ago. And they said that the Phantom isnt unmasked throughout most of the second act. Yesterday, he was unmasked from The Point Of No Return till the End. I found that pretty weird. Was it always like that? My parents swear is was different. In all, it was a great afternoon of theatre. It was not one of my favorite musicals i've seen, but i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. From a person who used to be terrified of the Phantom and his mask, it was great! Thanks for reading!!
