A shocking and devastating loss. We are fortunate to have so much of her work preserved on film, so her brilliance can shine on for newer generations.

I'd also add that we are lucky that she was passionate about educating the generations of dancers that followed her. She passed on so much knowledge and passion to those who were following in her footsteps.

Ms Reinking visited Melbourne to oversee a production of Chicago starring the wonderful Caroline O'Connor. During a rehearsal I attended, and knowing 'someone', I was asked if I would like to take Ms Reinking for a walk around the area while certain things were changed, not needing her input..

Needless to say, an hour spent strolling the neighbourhood and chatting, mainly about Australia, was one hour that is mine alone.

Thank you for that Hour and for all the years before.

It is so so sad. She was taken from us while still so vital. I think I was most touched by what Chita wrote, and her saying that she had just received the annual poinsettia from Annie. It's like her spirit can live on in a living thing.

Her performance in All That Jazz, playing a fictionalized version of herself, was such a memorable screen performance. An extraordinary dancer, she brought some much-needed lightness at times - as in the playful and warm "Everything Old is New Again." I've watched her dances from that film many times.

But Chicago is certainly her Broadway legacy. Reinking choreographed and starred in the most successful revival of all time. The show would have been a footnote in Bob Fosse's career if not for Reinking, and its successful film adaptation made it one of the few modern movie classics.

The name on everybody's lips right now is REINKING.

RIP to yet another theatre legend gone too soon in this terrible year. Hopefully more audiences get to witness her iconic, Fosse-esque, Tony-winning Chicago choreo if it reopens.

I worked on that production of Chicago Ms Reinking was one of a kind, she was fabulous to all us crew. Having spent hours with her in that theatre up too opening night was something special.

Sweetlips what a memory of a fantastic woman.

RIP

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Wow. As everyone has said, shocking. Seems to have been natural causes, so that's a blessing (no pain, no long term suffering), but death in any manner is a loss. This is a tremendous loss for a great many people. Condolences to her family.

So young and unexpected!

What horrible news. She was one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to see her on stage many times. She brought so much pleasure to so many people. She shall be sorely missed.

Also, Reinking's Cassie is the only one I've never seen (via video) from any of the Cassie's on Broadway. Heard it was stunning, just a shame video doesn't exist.

There's footage out there--or was--of Donna McKechnie from both her original run and her (short) return in the mid-80's, the latter of which I was lucky enough to see--my first Broadway show, to boot.

I've seen Cheryl Clark, Pam Sousa, Wanda Richert, Laura Gamache, Angelique Ilo & Vicki Frederick who's videos were all up at some point. Never seen Reinking's Cassie.

https://youtu.be/k9DLp-zfctk   This is a December interview that Ann Reinking gave to a Brazilian fellow.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

That was a well-done interview that, given subsequent events, feels more than a little poignant. Of the COVID-19 closings, she says it was the right thing to do but that she misses attending Broadway shows: "It'll be so much fun when we open back up again."
