NBC looking to revitalize Broadway with splashy primetime special

 

A showbiz insider told us: “Producers who have been hurt by shutdown don’t want to spend a lot of money… Some casts are worried that they haven’t performed in six months and need rehearsals and costume fittings because they might have put on a little weight. Some also want to be paid a week’s salary to participate.”

 

Here I thought NBC would foot the [majority] of the bill for this. Why can't people get paid for this?

They mean versus getting paid for the concert day only, or something like that.
Similar to how you get paid a week's salary for a cast recording but only record it (usually) on one day.

I mean they said it would air in October and then we never heard anything more. It's October 11th so I would say nah.

They should film the City Center productions of Annie Get Your Gun and Brigadoon with the original cast members. Maybe City Center could have some producing credit and make some money.

Just announced this is happening and will air on Thursday, December 10. Two hour special featuring Jagged Little Pill, Mean Girls, Diana, Chicago, Harry Potter, Ain't Too Proud, Jersey Boys and various special guests.

Can someone please explain what cast of Rent is performing? It on Broadway over 12 years ago and off Broadway was nearly 10 years ago now. No one cared for Rent LIve!, which was also broadcast on Fox not NBC? Is it more so just previous and notable cast members singing lines of what I would assume is Seasons of Love?

I was very confused about this too!  Personally, I'm excited to see the sneak peek at shows that will be arriving in the future, as Playbill mentioned in their article.  Also, as a country music fan, I'm intrigued to see what Brett Eldredge will be performing - he has a great baritone voice that would be perfect for a lot of Rodgers and Hammerstein/Irving Berlin-era Broadway.

Just probably people from previous casts, maybe a tour of Rent that was running, maybe Adam Pascal will show up. Who knows. They are using people who are available I guess. I'll watch and I appreciate an actual date for this unlike the Tonys.

There was a public FB post of Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Adam Pascal having checked in to Steiner Studios. It was on Adam's timeline and believe it was on or around Nov. 13, but he's either deleted or hidden it.

Those were the musicals they got? Disney couldn't even get Aladdin to promote the recording? No Wicked, Phantom (really, it can be two people singing to a pre-recorded track and a projected background THEY ALREADY HAVE), Six, Come From Away... disappointing. I'm glad James Snyder will (probably) get another bit of his Harry recorded, however.
