Memorial are always in the afternoon on Broadway. Yes,those on standby line all got admitted to the mezzanine at the Lunt Fontanne theatre. They were discouraged from waiting by the security guards outside over and over again. Interesting there were a lot of empty seats upstairs because of fear of not getting in, so many didn't bother.Heard it was amazing and with a 26 piece orchestra starting the Memorial off. The event is mentioned on the other theatre site ATC in more detail.
What a fine and fitting memorial for Jerry. The beautiful speeches, the wonderful performances and the MUSIC! I'm glad I brought 2 packs of Kleenex because I used them all!
The highlights: Bernadette singing "Time Heals Everything
Jeremy Jordan (in great voice) singing "It Only Takes A Moment:
Leslie Uggams rendition of "I Am What I Am"
Tyne Daly getting lost in the lyric of "Bosom Buddies" and shouting for help
The scroll of all the great ladies who've played Dolly--from Carol to Carolee
Yes it was great but it is disappointing for anyone that didn't bother coming or did what theater staff told them which was basically scram, kid. Then of course everyone easily got in.

I had a strange reaction to Betty Buckley's rendition of "Hello, Dolly". Even in a concert setting she came across as being wrong for the part. She didn't actually relate to the waiters and moved without grace. My medical problems kept me from seeing her in the National tour and judging from this excerpt, I didn"t miss much.

What a nasty post. Betty Buckley was a perfect Dolly!

Perhaps she was more satisfying in the actual production but she didn't come across well in this performance.
BTW: Just because I don't agree with you doesn't make my post "nasty".
Sounds like a great night, with an amazing setlist! Based on the Broadwayworld clip:
Jeremy was excellent.
Chenoweth was INCREDIBLE. Of course, she should be Mame in a revival!!
Not sure what I think about Sutton's performance of "Don't Want To Know"
Bernadette looks GREAT and she still has it, but of course I can hear a little roughness in her vocals that wasn't there even 7 years ago.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

If you thought that was a nasty post, I suspect that you are either in a bad mood or looking for a fight. IMO, that was a very polite post expressing disappointment with Buckley's performance. Isn't that a key objective of these boards...to have a forum to express your opinions, good or bad, about performances that you have seen, among other things. I can only assume that Dollypop's review would not have been nasty to youonlyif he had gushed about Buckley. I seem to remember that Buckley received both glowing and mediocre reviews on there road, among them that she was not a warm performer...I interpreted Doillypop's post as saying that in a way...she was not connecting with her fellow performers.
Highland Guy, how many actresses have you seen play Dolly?
I've seen a total of 12 on Broadway and on tour. I'm not counting the ones I've seen in regional, dinner theater or community productions. I've seen Broadway productions of the show a total of 94 times since 1964. That said, I think I have a good enough background to judge good casting in the title role.

Thanks for posting the link. Well-deserved memorial for a Broadway legend. I've seen many Dolly's over the years, dating back to the 1960's, but Betty Buckley brought a certain humor and sensitivity to the role (as evidenced here) that I especially appreciated. I count myself fortunate to have seen her four times on tour.
Sorry but IMHO Buckley was just lost as the stage Dolly. Hope her tribute to Jerry was better.
In this video, Uggams and Foster were trying WAY too hard. You got the part!!! And why didn't Uggams sing "If He Walked Into My Life"? That's her song. Harvey was there - Albin anyone?
Nice that O'Hara and Chenoweth just sang the damn songs. And O'Hara should be doing Marian...again IMHO.

It seemed that Buckley was miscast as Dolly--and I'm basing this on video clips and her performance at the Herman tribute.
I felt the same way about Gavin Creel in SHE LOVES ME. I absolutely love the guy both as a person and a performer but he just wasn't right for the role of a cad.
