So many good shows to see right now, never saw the movie, haven't seen this on any recent NY trips and hadn't planned to see this on my next trip in January. But this quote alone has made me want to. Bravo Leslie.

Breaking house records has really become a joke.  It is all about price inflation.  Follies did break the house record when it first opened, because it sold out at first, tickets were more expensive than the prior show, and there were NO premium price tickets!!!

It's worth seeing. Not a perfect show by any means, but Timbers knows how to create an environment and an event. I enjoyed myself and happy to see it turn itself around!

I am sure you are speaking in hyperbole, but are you saying that you thought it was a worse show that "Getting the Band Back Together," "Pretty Woman," or "King Kong?" My gang of theatergoers who saw everything last year liked it a far more than more of the musicals, including "Be More Chill" and "Tootsie." Plus I will take a new musical over a jukebox musical or a revival any day.

Also, I have no idea why folks on this site insist on dogging shows again and again. We all claim to love theater and then spend all day hating on it.
"

Didn't see PW or KK, but had a far better time at GTBBT (and a million other flops) than at BJ. There was something about the combination of narrative laziness, musical ineptitude, and cynical corporate fingerprints all overthe material that I found especially grating.

I'm happy for the people who like BJ, and for those who dislike my favorite shows. Their opinions are as valid as mine!
"

GTBBT was borderline racist and sexiest

here is why it is popular with the gen z set:

TIK TOK

Snippets of the songs have more than 2 billion plays.

How does it work? It seems like Music Man tickets are already being sold for the Winter Garden. Is Beetlejuice legally allowed to stay put unless their box office sales dropbelow a certain threshold? Or is it really just up to the theatre owners to decide?
"

Music Man tix are being sold for the Shubert Theatre
"

Nope! One give away is that they are selling seats through row V in the orchestra. The Shubert doesn't have a row V. It also has a third level,  and tickets are only being sold for two levels. While it is possible that they are holding back tickets to mask the theater, they aren't going to sell tickets for seats that can't exist.  Also, Mockingbird is selling tickets through the first week of September.  Unless The Music Man is a bare bones production,  there isn't enough time to load in and tech the show.

I liked BEETLEJUICE far better than:
TOOTSIE
THE PROM
HADESTOWN
FROZEN
WAITRESS
KING KONG

It’s doing well at the Box Office because people like it and are recommending to others.

It’s called good word-of-mouth.

It's the Danny McBride of Broadway- well-crafted lowbrow with a heart hidden underneath. Danny McBride's works will never be loved by everyone, no matter how much the people who get "Vice Principals" or "The Righteous Gemstones" talk them up.

From a marketing standpoint, they way they reinvented the crass sexual predator BJ from the film, and the juvenile playmate BJ from the cartoon into the "anarchic memetic trickster figure who acts like a monster but has a soft side" archetype for the musical is GOOD business sense. Deadpool, Rick Sanchez, about half the modern incarnations of Doctor Who- this archetype is the defining character type of this decade.

I’ve seen the show 3 times now. I’m not offended or anything to the people who don’t like it. Sure is my favorite show, but is it the best show I’ve ever seen? No. I started a conversation like this in another thread but I’m just wondering and super anxious to find out what is going to happen when music man hits Broadway.

Points made here. Also even if it was in the Shubert, what would Mockingbird do? It’s definitely not Hamilton or Hadestown, but it’s a popular one and it’s doing incredibly well.

The Music Man is going to break this record the first week it’s in the Winter Garden.

Beetlejuice is having the run I wish Spongebob had, and I’m interested to see how it plays out. A lot of shows choose to close out on top, and maybe the producers could pay the OBC cast to go out on a national tour next year.

And to add to the void, no amount of money Beetlejuice makes will ever convince me it’s a good show. Lots of similar mediocre shows make a lot of money every year on Broadway. If you enjoy it, that’s great - but please stop assuming that because it’s made a “record breaking” gross automatically validates it artistically.

Who said that?  Grosses have nothing to do with “artistic validity” (whatever THAT means!!!).

They do have a LOT to do with audience validity, aka, good Word-of-mouth.

I liked the show a lot and am very happy for Beetlejuice. I do think Beetlejuice will break that record once more at the end of this month.

From looking at the grosses for the Winter Garden in recent years, I noticed School of Rock still had a weekly gross of $2,022,136 for 9 performances the week between 12/25/16-01/01/17.

I am wondering with BJ's current momentum if they could break that in the next few weeks.

I’m not sure why people think the show is only successful because of “Gen Z, Tik Tok” ... that’s what everyone said about Be More Chill and see how that turned out?

The show is successful because they’ve made the right moves with their televised performances (a rare occurrence these days), sold some tickets and good word is spreading.

Like it or not, the show is a crowd pleaser and it shows.

I loved it. Saw it in August on a binge weekend with Moulin Rouge (blech) and Cher (final performance). BJ was the best of the three (love Cher but saw twice before). Thought Alex was amazing, and I'm a huge fan of Rob and Kerry so of course I loved them. The audience was loud and on fire the night we saw it. Everyone seemed to have an equally great time. Hope to see it again!

Now more than ever I'm wondering what this means for the future of the show, and The Music Man. Interesting to see how this will play out.

I think we should wait to see how the show fares post January/February. If it’s still doing the same business, I’d expect The Music Man having to look elsewhere. I think the current likely scenario is that West Side Story is the show to close for The Music Man

West Side Story closing for Music Man? No it ain't, no it ain't, but you gonna know the territory!
Why it's Beetlejuice's televised lyric changes made the trouble, made the people wanna get up and go seven, eight, nine, 10, 12, 14, 22, 23 miles to the Winter Garden.

Since the Shuberts actually decide which theater will get which show (the producers at most can make a request, but more often then not don't have a choice), it's very unlikely that Beetlejuice will get a reprieve. It's already been evicted. Unless Beetlejuice suddenly sells tickets as if it were Hamilton, it's gone. The Shuberts will make more money from The Music Man.

Will Hugh Jackman being the lead for THE MUSIC MAN also count?  In all his Broadway engagements (The Boy From Oz / A Steady Rain / Back On Broadway / The River), all the theatres where his shows resided were from the Shubert Group. He did enjoy a special friendship with former Chairman, the late Gerald Schoenfeld. In his recent engagement at the Madison Square Garden ( from his music tour "TheMan.TheMusic.TheShow" ), he acknowledged the presence of Philip Smith, Chairman of the Shubert Organization.  Mr. Smith must have appreciated his crowd-drawing appeal at the sold-out show at MSG.

But I guess it's best to wait for official announcements from the producers ( Scott Rudin, David Geffen &Barry Diller) as to where The Music Man will make its official home.
