Yes, there is a vague resemblance, but de Waal is vanilla. She has none of Diana's charisma. Erin Davie was excellent. I actually thought the Camilla character was more interesting. I'd like to see a musical about her (i.e. like Evita).

The music is generic and doesn't help. I didn't believe that any of the "characters" needed to sing. And the songs were banal in the extreme. The costumes were fine and the staging was adequate but the set needs some pizzazz. This needed to be completely rethought. I'll be interested to hear if anything is changed. It was a big,fat turkey if you ask me.

“None of them sound like the actual people”...Considering that James Hewitt has an atrocious singing voice (YouTube his performances on Celebrity X Factor if you dare!) that might be a good thing...

How exactly is she "so overdue"?? She's been in 5 Broadway shows -- and 2 of those were as a replacement!

You beat me to it.  I was going to say the same thing.  There is more hyperbole in this board than a Trump speech, at least until I turn the channel.

It's funny how some ideas for a musical, before you know anything else about the show, instantly make you roll your eyes. The gut is a funny thing.

I was hoping this would transfer. I think curiosity about the subject matter will supersede any potential bad reviews, especially with her sons in international news so frequently.

Honestly, I keep forgetting this show is a thing.  I can't imagine it having a huge draw.

I welcome the enthusiasm and positivity of contributors such as CindersGolightly.   This is a website that exists in part to celebrate everything Broadway.  How does it serve any of you to insult other members who express their appreciation for Broadway performers?  The negativity on this website is disturbing.

No one was insulted, and this board exists to discuss Broadway, good or ill. Calm down, Oscar.

I literally could not imagine anything worse than watching this.

I would even see Cats again before I'd even consider it...

Her performance was good, VERY good!  A nomination?  Sure, why not?

Having seen both shows in their previous runs, I find it hard to honestly believe de Waal would be considered serious competition for Warren. A possible contender for sure, but that’s about it.

I saw this in San Diego and was very disappointed.  I hope they've done some re-tooling and some recasting (Charles, specifically).   I mentioned this in my review of the show, it desperately needs a device, maybe she is being interviewed and she's remembering her life, or build the show around her iconic dresses (which were stunning), or even MORE bold, have the actresses playing Camila and Diana change parts at intermission.  One of the issues is that the writers are American, pretending to be British, and you can tell.  Having seen SIX a few times now, the score/lyrics for Diana lack all of the charm/tongue in cheek/wit of SIX (which is written by Brits).

Ive never inderstood America's obsession with British Royalty. I didnt care about them then, I don't now.

I know she did some lovely, philanthropic things but was largely an unhappy woman.

There’s definite an audience for this, with women being the primary Bway ticket buyers.

That said, in La Jolla this was very rough sitting through. An 80s rock musical of Diana’s story is actually a good idea but this team went for the obvious and cheap, with all the depth of a Lifetime TV movie.

Really?  The only Americans I know who show even a passing interest in Diana are all gay men.  And even then, just a handful.

I think a piece based on Diana’s life should be more of a play-with-music than a musical, and it needs a framing device...like her cooperation in the Andrew Morton book. That makes the most sense to me.

I tried enjoying the recording I was given, but...it’s rough as a whole. Hopefully it comes to Broadway almost completely redone, like Soft Power is going to be.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

I can't speak to quality of this production, and this is not my cup of tea, but I agree with BJR. There is definitely an audience for this: Diana was incredibly popular here, especially with American women. Its an instant recognition of a story the average person knows to be tragic and familiar. Im not saying its critic proof, but with the right marketing, this could really sell.

Absolutely. Diana had a huge following among American women, many near her age, fascinated by the young new princess.

Well, now that age (late 50s) is a prime ticket-buying demo.

exactly. i would imagine many of the people who were shattered when she died now comprise the prime theater ticket buying demographic. again, i have no idea if this show is any good or whether it will actually sell, but the general subject matter/theme seems ideal.
