I'm not entirely surprised. Though I agree that sending someone who hated the source material to review the show was not the Journal's finest hour...

Fingers still crossed for another Brantley love letter.

Yep, no surprise. A rave from Brantley.

Critics pic and a fair review. This show is pure escapism and I don’t believe it’s aiming for anything more. It does its job with aplomb!

will it close?

Why would a Critic's Pick and a rave review mean it would close?

And this isn't exactly a pull quote (other than "pure escapism" ), but it's lovely writing:

"What this emporium of impure temptations is really selling is pure escapism. You may not believe in it all by the next morning. But I swear you’ll feel nothing like regret."

Gonna guess the "will it close?" was a little bit of good-natured ribbing of those of us wondering how Brantley would react lol.

Love it or hate it just like the movie.

Wow, that was certainly a love letter to Olivo. I am so glad she’s back on Broadway.

AmNY says Tveit "has the depth of a stick figure."

Ouch.

I usually like Holdren, but she does sometimes gets on a No Fun soapbox.

(she’s also totally wrong about the context of “Like a Virgin” in the movie...)

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

Oof. I would think that review super harsh if I didn’t agree with every word of it.

I'm shocked so many reviews for this have been good. There are plenty of fun, crowd-pleasing shows without much substance (Ain't Too Proud, Aladdin, etc.) that are actually well constructed. This reminded me more of Mamma Mia, mostly fun but still just a hodge podge of songs crammed in without real meaning and a low stakes plot.

Dude, we definitely need to hang out. You sound like a fun guy to be around.

Yeah, because God forbid the TIMES admits its reviewers are human and their opinions are at least somewhat subjective.

I've long thought that since the NYT is the only paper that actually affects b.o., they should send three critics to every Broadway show and print their reviews side-by-side. But of course that would interfere with their pose as the Voice of God.
"

YES. Print them side-by-side, and don't let them compare notes beforehand.

"A rather cynical attempt to whip up something heartfelt," but a rave nonetheless.
