If Redgrave doesn’t transfer, my hope, prayer, wish, all of them is that they get someone like Angela Lansbury or even Julie Andrews. I know it’s silly but damn I want that.

I think ti is just the nature of rehearing part one, getting it settled, and then adding part two in and getting it settled. They can't  open part 1 earlier, and then part 2 a month later...

This actually makes sense in an audience way. Come see part one now and part two any time in the run. It'll also maybe help fill up part two more towards the end of the run. Both times I saw part two in Novemeber it was emptier than part one the day or morning before.

I know what you mean. Redgrave was fantastic and spot on when I saw her perform last fall. The character she plays is from South Carolina and if it's going on Broadway that southern accent has to be spot on. I was hoping they'd cast Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cherry Jones, etc. if Redgrave doesn't transfer.

Of all those names, Cherry Jones would be perfect. But I feel like that’s the role they can get a NAME for.

Can you explain the end of the first part, Jordan?

Redgrave was out the day we saw both parts and it's the only thing that marred an otherwise extraordinary all-day experience. Lansbury would be marvelous, I bet. You need someone who can instantly project infinite warmth, kindness and empathy from the moment she makes her last-minute  appearance.

I would also recommend reading the novel if you're unfamiliar with it before seeing the play. Not at all because it's needed to follow the plot, but rather to better appreciate the ingenious and often very subtle parallels Lopez has created to characters and incidents in the original. Just adds to the delicious brilliance of the work.

If only Jessica Tandy were still around. She was a divine actress and the go to old southern woman.

What about Kathy Bates? We haven't seen her around here for many years. A return would be very welcome, but I'm not sure she'd go for a 15 minute part.

I wonder if Julie Andrews would. I know that’s a huge hope. But still.

Also I would love to see Jonathan Groff in this

I always hate being the somewhat negative voice around this show but when I saw Redgrave she seemed tentative in her lines, movements and just...too old. Even a much older Angela Lansbury I thought had a much better command of the stage in Driving Miss Daisy. I would be SHOCKED if they could get her, but what an amazing event if they could.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Basically what I said. She had very clear moments of needing lines fed to her via earpiece (or at least the way she paused so much) and basically had to be helped around the stage by the boys. For a character that's supposed to be a caretaker and move furniture around I wasn't buying it.

I'm curious why everyone thinks it would attract a big big name to make a return to Broadway. I think it'll be a solid theatre actress but not necessarily a "name" in the big sense.

I would really enjoy some body and ethnic diversity for the Broadway production cause the entire West End cast looks like Gap models

Because it’s 15 minutes of stage time 4x a week, top billing, and an almost guaranteed Tony Award for the right person. If that isn’t enough reason for an older actress who normally wouldn’t do Broadway again to come back, I don’t know what the hell is.

I still think someone like Meryl would want a bigger/juicer part. I get it's an easier gig but I still think we'll get a theatre name not a Hollywood name as much as I'd love it, especially that long of a run.

So should I be sorting tickets to this tomorrow, or will this be a slower burn on the box office?! Thoughts?

I am going to wait a bit, I can’t imagine it will sell THAT well to the point where it won’t be discounted or never on TDF. If Angels in America or The Ferryman can’t be big sold out hits, I can’t imagine this will be. It will be a hard sell.

Of course, this also depends on casting.

I was in the dead last row of the mezzanine for The Bands Visit and it was absolutely perfect. I could still feel the intimacy of the piece from way back there

I agree. It's the perfect role for a much older legendary actress.

Rear mezz is very good af that theatre.

I agree that it’ll be a theatre actress. That’s why I said those two names. I’m sure they’re working hard to get Redgrave to transfer, though. But I really like what Sistergeorge said -

“You need someone who can instantly project infinite warmth, kindness and empathy from the moment she makes her last-minute appearance.”

That’s so true. The scene is very grounded but also has a real ethereal tone to it that had to be matched by the actress.

I could definitely see Judith Light in this role for some reason. Especially given her history with the LGBTQ community.

Judith F’ng Light. I think she’s far too young but my God, she would be...everything.

I like the new logo! Not sure if I prefer it yet, colors/tone/design feel almost a bit Ferryman to me, which is odd. Glad to hear about the rear mezz here though. I will 100% be attending this fall, wow, so excited!
