I thought that this was a great idea the moment I heard that Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd were going to be recast in their original roles. Oh, you say that I understood wrong. Lloyd looks spry at 81 and just married for the fifth time in 2016. Michael J. could get some humor out of his Parkinsons.

I thought that this was doomed from the first I heard of it because the success of the film and its extension into two sequels was dependent on the chemistry between the leading characters. Lloyd in particular created a really unique character.

I kind of compare this to the original Star Trek series. It had a lot of silly plots and cheesy sets, but the chemistry between the three leads was huge.

It's not my money behind it so I'm happy to see them give it a shot, but all will depend on the casting.

Is there a specific reason why this is being developed in England? I feel like Back to the Future is such an American staple. I can’t imagine it being as famous over there as it is here.

Flying car musicals have had more success in the West End.

Sorry, but the show was horrible and it closed after only a few months.  Ugh, what a disaster.  The score was forgettable, the acting was sub-par and the technical difficulties getting that car to work were enormously time consuming.  I ought to know.  I saw the show on May 11, 2020.

Well, in a non-crazy world we wouldn't have to worry about seeing this in a Broadway theatre, but in this day and age sanity seems to be in short supply.

Reminds me of “Great Big Stuff” from DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.   Yikes!

I will be there during its first week and will report back. That clip is not promising though, so I'm sure it will be a big hit.

That song was pretty rough but the version of “Back in Time” by Huey Lewis and the news Is actually quite nice... maybe there’s hope!

...You mean the song they performed on the Tony Awards to showcase Norbert Leo Butz's Tony-winning performance?  The BTTF song wishes it was anywhere near that good.

First (and so far only) response to the first performance on TheatreBoard.

Just out of first preview.... WOW. The visual spectacle is my biggest takeaway and the integration or practical effects with projection (+ lighting/sound etc) was phenomenal. One stop for a minute or two before going back to the future... but that was it. There’s a lot I could spoil.... but just go an experience it. Some great songs and superb casting too. Wild audience!

Reading all the first performance thoughts at BTTF Musical Twitter

I noticed the same thing! Seems like a really promising start. I found a news segment that has some new show clips:

These tweets are making me cautiously optimistic for a show I had absolutely no faith in working. Is this gonna be another King Kong, where people only see it for the spectacle? They took down the Doc Brown song, so I didn't get to hear it, but I wasn't a big fan of Marty's song that was uploaded last year.

I don't know about the original film composer writing a musical theatre score. They're two entirely different skill sets. The only person I've really seen do both well is Marc Shaiman.
