Just got out. I really expected to love this but I didn’t like it much at all. I think the book is really poor. A lot of underdeveloped characters and the show just kind of ends without any real earned sense of resolution. The score was fine, though there are only 1 or 2 songs that stood out to me. The actors were good, strong voices. I enjoyed the stage design too. Picture below

Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy it. Hoping I enjoy it more when I see it in two weeks. Can you try to link the picture again! The link you provided took me to a video of a woman playing the violin with a cat in her lap.

I was also there tonight and was quite amazed at how amateurish the book, the lyrics, and most of the score turned out to be. The performers are great and are trying their best to elevate the material, which makes it even more uncomfortable to see them fail while trying. It needs tons of trimming and rewriting to live up to the caliber of the cast it has. I think half of the songs could and should be cut as the musicalization feels unearned and adds little to nothing to the words/lyrics and the story. This is definitely NOT the next Dear Evan Hansen, at least not in the shape it is now.

I was there as well tonight and I thought the performances were strong, but it is mostly a 3 person show. Mom and son (and sometimes "Jim"Superhero at Second Stage . I felt terrible for the other roles who had about 5 minutes (if that) on stage. I didn't feel any connection with the material until the end of act 2 (and I am dealing with the same issues as the family in this show). Parts seemed to drag and drag. Kate Baldwin sounded brilliant as ever, especially in the finale. I am sure they will be working on it and I wish them the best of luck with it.

Yes, that link worked. Thanks! Sorry to hear 2 negative reports. Hopefully, they make some improvements to it before I see it on Feb. 16th. Set looks awesome though. I hope I don’t end up regretting filling one of slots with this.

One question. I’m sitting in A-5. Do you think I’ll have any problem seeing into the back of the stage? I got one of the cheaper far left seats ($74 total after discount) and am not inclined to spend more based on these reports unless I find out that I will miss a lot. That set looks awesome.

I was there tonight too and enjoyed it quite a bit, although agree there is definitely work to be done. But I was really moved by the second act. Kate Baldwin was flawless and sounded amazing with Bryce.

I was also very disappointed in the material. The performers try their best to put it over, but there's just so much they can do. I think I went in with high expectations, given the caliber of the people involved, but this show doesn't represent their best. Sorry to say. I was waiting for a glimmer of originality, but each song sounds the same and the lyrics don't help. After a while, my heart sank when a new song started up.

On the bright side, some of the special effects were novel. The staging of the song in the YouTube video was just great. I was hoping for more of that, but the direction seemed to fall off after that. And I was aware of the orchestrations from time to time, and they were excellent. The band sounded wonderful too.

Update: I think I’m gong to call and try to upgrade my seat as I fear I do have a partial view seat (A-5). With discount code entered, here are seats (and total prices) I’m considering C-112 ($114), H-110 ($114), K-110 ($94) or J113 ($84). For those that were there last night, what are your thoughts? There aren’t many pics on aviewfrommyseat.com. Thanks!

Also, my $74 ($69 + $5 fee) seat now would be $94 ($84+ $5 fee) even with discount code from Playbill. Do you think they’d do an even trade for K-110 or J-113? Anyone have experience exchanging at this theater?

Agree that the final song was probably the strongest , but the emotion felt unearned. And there was no logical progression to get there, it just happened. The book was just lazy, with so many underdeveloped characters

I wasn't there last night, but will be there in March and have C 101.  I sat in F 113 for DEH and thought it was great.  I sat in H 114 for Torch Song, also great.  I was in A 106 for Days or Rage (might have been too close for me, but only because it was a two-level set, quite a surprise).  There aren't really any bad seats.  But for this show, I heard that the front row to the far right has a bit of a steep view up at times due to the set on the right.  I would say that all of your listed choices are fine.  Do you like to be close, then C.  And if not so close, then H.  Do you want to save $20, then K.

Don’t know if it’s worth it to upgrade for a show you’ve said you could regret seeing. Call the box office and say you heard it’s a partial view. They might offer to move you for free. If not, I’d probably just stay put.

I'm not looking at the seat map at the moment, but are K 110 and J 113 the same price with the code as your A 5?  I have exchanged my subscriber seat, plus I also exchanged two of my guest seats (says no exchanges), all for this show, but the seats I moved to were priced the same as the ones I exchanged.  I have had great customer service from the box office.  I also believe that I exchanged my non-subscriber DEH seat back in 2016, and was only charged the difference in price.

All good points. Yes, J-113, K-110 and A-5 are now all the same price. And yes, probably doesn’t make sense to pay more to see the show at this point. I think I’ll call tomorrow and try to get moved to K-110.

Can someone who was there let me know what the running time is? I’ve seen it listed as both 2hrs 30 and 2 hrs 15 mins.

I know the website says 2 hours 15 mins but it was longer than that. I think it was around 2 hours 20-25 mins

I'm sorry, I didn't think to look at my phone when it was over. But it definitely felt too long and needs a good trim, although even that won't help much, alas.

The show started a few minutes after 8 and was over at 10:25. I imagine it will get tighter

I called box office few minutes ago. Person I spoke to said A-5 isn’t partial view and I won’t miss anything, even upstage. I didn’t press him for a different seat so I guess we’ll see. Lol

It needs a trim, but it also needs things expanded. The more I think about this the less I liked it

I often like things that others mostly don’t like while sometimes I’m underwhelmed by things others adore. I’m glad I’m going in now with diminished expectations. Hopefully, that’ll be to my benefit.

My favourite things about Next to Normal and If/Then were Brian Yorkey's lyrics and books, although i did also enjoy Tom Kitt's music.  And they have previously referred to their musical-writing collaboration as their professional marriage.  So why is Tom Kitt writing the whole show, including lyrics and book, without Brian Yorkey?  Did they have a falling-out or something?  I hope not!  I definitely would love to experience more of their musicals in the future.  And for this show, the things people seem to think need improving are the book and lyrics.  Couldn't Yorkey get involved in revisions for this?

Kitt and Yorkey are writing the score to  Magic Mike together. It doesn't appear they've broken up their partnership. Yorkey has done quite a bit of work on his own too, including 13 Reasons Why. So. I guess they just have things they want to do on their own too. Like normal people.

Additionally, John Logan is writing the book for Superhero. John Logan is a prolific playwright with Oscar, Tony, and Olivier award nominations. I think most folks would gladly have an artistic affair of someone of such high caliber.

Heard it's terribly bland and forgetful.
