THE PROM Previews |
for those of you jumping to conclusions about the set based on that Instagram picture: I saw the show in Atlanta and that picture looked like the set for the prologue scene set at a NY Opening Night. It's cartoonish but not terrible...but it IS indicative of the show's difficulty in deciding on a tone and a time. The jokes are circa 1965, the situation feels circa 1985 and the setting seems to be 2005...and its take on 'small town America' is just plain outdated. And sadly, it's backed by an ad campaign that looks like it's designed for a 1960s musical about teens and their anguished parents (BYE BYE BIRDIE, maybe?)....and the awful song they chose to 'release' early on video is one of the most generic in the show.
The rest of the score is much, much better and the overall show is extremely entertaining. Very, very funny (thanks to an excellent cast of Broadway vets), with some really good moments throughout. I enjoyed it a lot and will see it again. Showmanship wins in this one.
I'm hoping they've fixed some of the Atlanta problems, and that despite the marketing campaign it can find the right audience. I still liked it a lot more than many other things I've seen on Broadway or on the Road to Broadway.
Great price, course
Attending 11/10 matinee as part of my NYC theatre week. Also attending Pretty Woman, King Kong, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Cher Show and Girl From The North Country. Catholic tastes.

Brooks Ashmanskas, Beth Leaval, and Christopher Sieber--all directed by Casey Nicholaw. It has names, that's not the issue. seems to be a material, and marketing issue.
Agreed that this show has a marketing problem. I'm arguably its target audience (under 20, female, LGBTQ, big proponent of a musical comedy) and I quite frankly have no real desire to see it. The ads all look too cartoonish and the music I've heard doesn't really excite me. However, I initially kind of felt that way about Head Over Heels and I actually really enjoyed that show, so maybe I'll give this one a go.

The marketing isn’t very good for this show. They’re experiencing something much worse than King Kong, which is that no one has heard of this or is talking about it. Even if King Kong is bad, there’s a curiosity there.
Not my picture but here is the show curtain:

Ordinary Lives
Ordinary Lives (Reprise)
Just Breathe
It s Not About Me
Dance With You
The Acceptance Song
You Happened

Tonight Belongs to You
Act 2
Zazz
The Lady's Improving
Love Thy Neighbor

Exactly! I don't get it...
Plus, Urinetown won best Score Tony with a song titled 'Cop Song'...because it is a song that all the cops sing..., if 'Acceptance Song' is the appropriate song title, what is the issue?
I'm really hoping this one can pull off a Gentleman's Guide-esque run if it is the charming musical comedy it is seeming to be.

You're one of my FAVORITE posters on this site and you have been since I've literally been a teenager.

You also said Gettin the band back together was a good show
I loved Gettin’ the Band...
Others didn’t. It takes nothing away from my enjoyment of something if others didn’t like it. I’m sure people will not like a The Prom, but I did. I’ll still like it when they come on here and say they hated it. There are people on here who think Cats is a great show. So if you need the validation of others before deciding if you want to see something, that’s on you.

And there you have it. Well put.
I was skeptical but my god did I fall in love.
I think it’ll get compared to Mean Girls a lot and while I did think the score for MG was slightly stronger this show has ten times as much heart and dare I say even funnier.
Beth Leavel is a shoe in for a tony nom.
I was almost in tears during ‘Unruly Heart’ and I seriously hope this show gets the chance it deserves.
This is definitely my favourite show in a while.
