Glad to hear it’s landing so well. For those who saw it off Broadway and on, were there noticeable changes, or was it more just a sense, as mentioned, of the humor landing even better, etc?

Here’s a photo (not mine) of the current merch stand.

Also, I would be absolutely shocked if Michael Urie wasn’t nominated. I will be honest and say that when he was announced for the off-Broadway run, I was skeptical (because he’s so different from Harvey and the characterization I’m used to with this show) but he is nothing short of incredible.

I was at the show last night but didn't get the buttons.  Admittedly, I was one of the first out the door after the curtain call, so perhaps they hadn't set up yet.  Where were they handing them out?  Could you post a picture of the buttons?  Thanks!

Caye2, the person I got mine from was standing literally right in the corner against the front door - really easy to miss them, what caught my eye was the BCEFA bucket he had them in.

I had to turn around and go back in to grab one.

Saw the show last night with a TDF ticket which had me sitting 6th row center in the orch.

Without exaggerating, it was one of the finest theatrical experiences of my life.

Urie was sensational from the first moment he spoke. (He doesn't get entrance applause because no one knows who he is due to his drag makeup). His scenes with his mother absolutely crackle.

I liked Ward Horton very much. He made it hard to hate his character.

I'll be seeing this again.

Is Claybourne Elder scheduled to play Ed for specific performances, or does he only go on if Ward Horton is out for some reason?

More people should be talking about Torch Song. What an incredible time at the theatre. This production runs three hours, but it feels like a very slim fraction of the time. It is paced perfectly.

The show rests on Urie’s shoulders, and boy, does he deliver. It is an absolute pleasure to let him take you on Arnold’s journey. You cheer him on, you cry for him, you laugh—hysterically—with him (OMG, Urie’s comedic talent is beyond sensational). Urie is a knockout.

Ruehl is only in the show’s second act, but her performance punches you in the gut. She and Urie are both electric and heartbreaking together.

The play itself is just fantastic, and I truly cannot find a fault with this production.  I will be recommending this highly and I hope it has a strong run.

I don’t mean to be the contrarian, but:

I was underwhelmed. Urie was too clown-like for me. Supporting cast was...uneven. The third part, also known as Act II in this production, is the only noteworthy portion of the show. Ruehl is tremendous. Urie has moments of greatness with her, but quickly resorts back to being a goof ball. A little too much Barney Fife and not enough pathos.

I was prepared to be wowed, so perhaps I set myself up for disappointment.

I saw the matinee today and loved it. It was my first time seeing the play, I was blown away by both the material and Michael Urie's performance. He truly embodied the part very well and it did not feel like acting. The rest of the ensemble was also very good in an understated yet profound way. Mercedes Ruehl truly brought the play to life even more in the third part, and had excellent chemistry with Urie and the rest of the cast. I would absolutely recommend this production. There were a lot of empty seats in the rear orchestra, unfortunately. I sat Row M center and it was virtually empty past Row N. Hopefully word of mouth and reviews help the box office.

He's just the understudy

Yup Claybourne is the understudy. He was at the Broadway Tastes event at the Torch song table. Such a nice guy!

He and Will Blum are both understudies in the show. I'd love to see Will perform as Arnold and see his interpretation of the role!

Looking to get tickets and wanted to get some thoughts on the possibility of my timeline - we have a flight out of JFK that leaves at 9:00PM. If we get out of the Sunday matinee at 6:00, do we realistically have time to make our flight? Any help appreciated. I travel into the city often but this is a tighter timeline than usual.

IdinaBellFoster, the show is running exactly three hours (at least when I saw it last week). If you're going to the airport directly from the Hayes, I think you'll have plenty of time.

I saw this show last night and what an evening of theatre! It started at 8:05pm or so and ended roughly around 11pm so expect to be there for 3 hours.

Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl were FANTASTIC! To me, they were the stars of the show. Their comedic timing was flawless. I'll admit before watching the show I thought Michael Urie was too 'goodlooking' to be cast as Arnold. It doesn't matter. It's how he delivers as Arnold that's more important.

I'm a gay male in my mid-30s and even though this play premiered back in the 80s I really felt a connection with this play in today's society living in NYC. I really hope to see the show again later in its run. I sat in the front row and loved the legroom though I did feel too close in some scenes (though I'm not complaining!)

Can someone report back on what the seats are like at the newly renovated Helen Hayes?

I haven’t been there since DAMES AT SEA and they were the most cramped seats I’ve ever sat in! I’m hoping they changed the seats along with the rest of the theatre.

Wondering how sitting through the three hour TORCH SONG will be...

The orchestra was slightly cramped, but I'm 6'2" and I was fine overall. It could have been better, but I've sat in worse!
