Our screening was last night.  It's definitely very good.  Maybe not as "fun" as the first one, as there are more lesser-known songs used ... and most are ballads. That said, the last 15 minutes or so are pretty stellar.

I saw the movie tonight, and it was awesome!

It would be interesting to make a list of all the song snippets/cues not on the soundtrack, but featured in the film.

"Chiquitita" was used as music cues twice, "Slipping Through My Fingers" is featured near the end, "Under Attack" music is in the closing credits briefly, but there are tons others.

Also, was surprised that Meryl singing "The Day Before You Came" isn't in the movie, or even the closing credits, but is the last track on the soundtrack.

Does anyone know if it was a deleted scene, and actually filmed, or just recorded especially for the soundtrack? It doesn't really fit anywhere in the movie, and would be too much of a downer for the end credits, so I can see why it was cut, if it was.

I wonder why they felt the need to kill Donna. It seems like a dark turk for such a light, fluffy movie. Couldn’t they just have said she’s off having her adventures?

Are Cher's scenes all flashbacks? 'Cause she's only 3 years older than Streep - but with all her surgery, she looks about 20 years younger (with the right lights and make-up).

I saw this last night! It was really good!! And honestly, it was lowkey sad. I almost cried during the "I've Been Waiting for You" flashback scene. Lily James killed it. She was amazing in Downton Abbey, Cinderella, and in this! I would not be surprised if she's cast as Glinda in the eventual Wicked movie. All in all, it was a great film! Oh, and to answer someone's question, Cher's scenes weren't in flashback.

P.S. "I Wonder" was cut. At first, I was bummed, but now I think I can see why it was deleted. I guess i'll have to wait for the real explanation from the director/producers.

The Times is not thrilled with it - but isn't that to be expected? They didn't like the first one, either (although in this review they conceed that the original was fun for the star power).

I'm very excited for this movie. The first one is a film I return to again and again - and I saw it three times in theatres! Honestly, it was the movie, along with Hairspray, that really got me into theatre. I had them on DVD and would watch them again and again.

newintown, I would almost argue that the outlandish camp is a feature, not a detraction. When the first film included scenes with all three main actors playing their own 17-year old selves, Julie Walters hanging off the side of a building while stalking Stellan Skarsgard, and Christine Baranski dancing a peon to her milkshake bringing all the boys to the yard (so to speak), the idea of Cher being Streep's mother just seems to make sense in a way it wouldn't for other movies.

Funny story: my younger brother - who is decidedly not a theatre or musical fan (he's the butch one Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Reactions Thread)) loved the first movie so much he bought the soundtrack at target with his own money. And he was in middle school, so he didn't have a lot if cash to burn. And Streep's "Slipping Through My Fingers" is surprisingly good.

Sorry sent a private message but realized I can reply here. Is The Day Before You Came featured in the movie?

Nope. I Wonder and The Day Before You Came aren't featured in the movie. On the flip side, Thank You for the Music, SOS, Hasta Manana, and Hole in Your Soul are featured in the movie, but are not on the soundtrack.

God, I don’t think I’ve smiled that much in my life. I LOVED it! Much better directed than the first too. Can’t wait to go again.

saw the movie tonight and really enjoyed it. do not go in expecting plot - there’s basically none. i wished Meryl was there but the rest of the cast soldiers on without her. my favorite parts were the young Donna timeline with the interactions among her and her friends and prospective suitors, as well as Cher appearing towards the end. the musical performances are also very enjoyable! i look forward to watching it again

Rex Reed certainly didn’t find the sequel charming.

It was cute. Everyone in the theater seemed to love it. There was applause, squealing, laughter, and tears heard throughout; as well as women singing along. I think everyone there had a good time.

i don’t even think that man saw the movie because during the actual narrative i don’t recall any of the past young characters interacting with their adult selves, that only happened in the encore (outside the narrative)

Always have to take Rotten Tomatoes' scores with a grain of salt, but this one's at 80% while the first one was at 54%. Probably a lot of reviewers who -- like many of us -- expected this to be a complete train wreck and were relieved/pleasantly surprised. Low expectations can go a long way.

Other than some speak-singing for a few seconds, Pierce Brosnan doesn't really sing. That alone was worth a 20% bump. However, the film doesn't make any sense at all.

Went to see this film this morning and loved it!.  Lily James was amazing as young Donna, as were all of the other actors that played the younger selves from the first film.  Cher commanded the screen for the small time that she was in the film and I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a supporting actress Oscar nomination next year!  I loved how some of the musical numbers were shot like old-time movie musicals.  I cried from the "Dancing Queen" number off and on all the way to the end, it was very enjoyable and will need a second viewing!...BEST SEVEN MINUTES SPENT IN THE MOVIE THEATRE ALL YEAR!!!...

So joyous, so happy, so emotional. This movie is the movie of the summer for me. And I agree with someone on Twitter that asks to ban all straight white men to review this movie lol.

I know they don't have the voice but Amanda Seyfried and Lily James look perfect as Galinda and Elphaba

Random thing- does Lily wear contacts in the film so her eyes match Meryl's? In the promo shots i've seen she has brown eyes and doesnt look very close to Meryl. Is it easy to believe theyre the same person?

A friend mentioned this to me yesterday, and I honestly wouldn’t have noticed without having had it pointed out, but their eyes are not the same color. Lily has brown eyes.

I saw this yesterday and loved it. It’s silly and cheesy, but you can’t help but to have fun (except for the handful of people I saw walk out, apparently).

This is a flaming turd. They spent more on art direction (like the orange skirt exactly the same shade as the oranges she is picking) than on a script.

Cher's face looks like it beaten with sledgehammer on an anvil in some old time blacksmith's workshop, before being run over by a bus.

I'll probably go see this again at least once or twice.
