I remember the response to this show being quite muted when it ran last year, and I'm not sure if it's the rough season for musicals we just had but I LOVED this show.

Some of it is a big heavy handed, but I was willing to look past it for Osnes and Cott's performances. It's staged incredibly well, and the filming only elevates Blankenbuehler's work. Max Clayton caught my eye several times, and it's clear Blakenbuehler enjoyed heavily featuring him.

Had this held off a year I think it could've had a much longer run.

How was the sound? On the show's FB page there are some reports of muddy mix. Is the sound issue volume, or blend of ensemble/soloists and orchestra? This show always had a challenge in that area, since 1/3 of the instruments are played inside the story, mixed with the pit band at the back of the house. Is that the reaction, or is it simply too softly presented/set in the video?

I thought the mix was great. I didn't have any issues hearing anything.

It is a glitch and when reported, they show as unavailable. I do agree it’s crap but it is absolutely against the term of service. I have a friend who was going to them for months and out of the blue his account was revoked.

The only issue I had with the sound was that I thought the vocals in "Nobody" were a little quiet. And even that was very mild. Other than that, I heard no problems with the sound.

I was at the final performance on Broadway and I saw it again tonight on the big screen.  I really enjoyed it live, but it was even better on the big screen.  I don’t think I appreciated Corey Cott and Laura Osnes’ performances as much from mezzanine of the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.  They are absolutely fantastic. Bandstand really translates well to the screen.  I will definitely catch it again on Thursday.  I also need this to be released on DVD or Blu-Ray.

There were definitely some sound mix choices/issues.  And oy -- some directiorial & editing choices that should have been better.  But overall, I thought it worked really well and wish I could see it again Thursday night.

I liked Bandstand when I saw it on Broadway, and I was even more impressed tonight seeing it on the big screen.  The performances really shined as did the story, the score, direction, choreography (though you still lose some with the editing).   Yes, it pushes in some areas but it is a strong show.  Regarding MoviePass - I love MoviePass and use it all the time - but not for Bandstand.   Maybe MoviePass pays the theatres and ultimately the filmmakers at the same rate as regular purchase.  Anyone here know?    My sense is they don't.    I still wanted to pay outright for my ticket as a vote to support this production and hopefully future tapings of Broadway.

I saw Bandstand last night and thought that it was fantastic! I really wish that it would have had a longer run on Broadway because the story is truly beautiful as well as the songs and choreography. The entire cast was insanely talented and Corey definitely stood out in my opinion with the emotion he brought to the role. When I got home I pulled out my signed Bandstand playbill (which i got through the mail, i wrote to Laura) and I felt like I actually went to see it on Broadway. It was definitely a great experience and I can’t wait for it to come out on dvd or on Netflix.

I went on Monday and the show was refreshingly entertaining. However I prefer Memphis and Newsies out of only three filmed Broadway performances I have seen in cinemas.

And it seems that MoviePass has corrected their mistake for today.   Bandstand is not selectable and greyed out for today’s showings.

I wonder if they'll release it on streaming platforms like they did with Newsies...Would have loved to see it in theaters but already have tickets to a show for tonight. Such a shame I won't be able to see it again, I really enjoyed it on Broadway.

I really hope they stream it or release on DVD - I’ve had plans during both showings near me.

Maybe they’ll do more screenings as well - Allegiance had three sets of screenings, if I remember correctly.

ETA - did anyone purchase/get more information on the Allegianxe box set? I don’t remember seeing anything post-announcement. http://allegiancemusical.com/DVD/

I forgot to mention that the theater where I'm going, well, it's completely sold out except for wheelchair and companion seats. That's great! So check ahead or buy online. The Regal and AMC sites let you reserve seats but not from Fandango.

There were some definite sound issues that I noticed on Thursday evening. Overall, however, it was an enjoyable enough little show. A rather simple story whose ultimate outcome is telegraphed immediately, but a pleasant enough show. A bit heavy-handed. It’s no South Pacific, that’s for sure. Two great performances from the leads, and Beth Leavel never disappoints.

As Beth Leavel leaned in to offer some seasoned wisdom to Laura Osnes, did anyone wonder if she might burst into:

Please tell me she did it at least once in rehearsal.

I woke up to the charms of Bandstand too late to see it live-- only on the Tonys that year when they performed the powerhouse "Nobody" number and we all sat up and took notice. So I was super delighted to see it last Monday through Fathom at an art house in Beverly Hills.

As usual, the compulsive editing drove me up a wall when all I wanted to see was a few wide shots of the whole stage to understand how it would have felt to be there in the theater. That editing particularly got in the way of understanding what on earth Blankenbuehler was up to with his abstract choreography invading every scene. Were all those male dancers dragging themselves along with the piano standing in for Donny's bad memories? Maybe someone who saw the show onstage can explain what that was all about.

That aside, the show itself was sincerely moving and sincerely entertaining. Great performances throughout, and beautiful music-making at all the points it needed to hit home. I've loved the score for a while with the exception of "Welcome Home", the Act II climax that is the most bombastic, least interesting number in the entire score, a shame when it comes right after my favorite song, the radiant "This is Life".

It saddens me to think that a show this rich failed to find an audience in its original Broadway incarnation. Maybe the Fathom screenings will inspire smart regional theaters to give the show new life.

I originally wanted to see this on Thursday night but for some reason, the Fathom website would only let me buy tickets for the Monday night show. The Thursday show was listed but when I tried to click on the ticket link, I got a message that said the theater was still setting up ticketing and to check back later. I was afraid that this meant they were not going to do the Thursday show so I just bought tickets to the Monday show. I kept checking to see if tickets were available for Thursday and they finally had a working link, but not until Wednesday.

The show was supposed to start at 7pm but by 7:20, we were all just sitting around wondering if they'd forgotten about us. Someone finally went out to the lobby to remind them that the movie was supposed to start at 7pm. When they finally started the movie, we sat through all the ads and I noticed that most of them were for other Fathom events that had already happened in May and early June. That was the next sign that things were not going well. When the actual show finally started, it was Poofs, not Bandstand, so once again, we had to send someone out to the lobby.

They finally managed to find Bandstand on their Dish menu (which we all got to see on the screen) but the sound was so low we could barely hear. I was sitting very close to the front and I have excellent hearing but they just didn't have the volume up enough. We could hear every boom from The Incredibles 2 which was playing in the theater next to us, but we could barely hear the singing in Bandstand. Another trip to the lobby and they turned up the volume a little bit.

Five minutes before the show ended, the movie stopped. Just a black screen. It was after they sang "Welcome Home" at the competition and then they were all shown walking out of the movie theater. We had to send someone out to the lobby AGAIN. There was a lot of fussing with the machine and we had to sit through more ads. They initially got the sound going but no picture. Once the managed to get the picture back on the screen, they rewound to "Welcome Home." Then the movie stopped at the same place near the end.

After more messing with the projector, AMC just gave up and told us that the movie was canceled. Keep in mind that we had been sitting there for 20 minutes so we could watch the last five minutes of the movie. Luckily, one person in the audience had seen the show while it was on Broadway so she gave us a synopsis of what we didn't get to see (the band that won flopped and the Danny Nova band was a success, Danny and Julia are still together).

Since the run time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, we should have been done by 9:15 but due to all the delays (and starting half an hour late), we didn't leave the theater until after 10pm. It was a frustrating experience, to say the least. I try not to be a grouch, but that really soured me on Fathom in general. I've seen many of their events in the past without an issue so I don't know what the problem was this time.

They gave us movie passes and made sure to tell us that we could use them for anything including Dolby movies that cost $22, but considering that we paid $18 per ticket, it's not as impressive as I think they wanted it to be.

I feel bad complaining because I just wanted to enjoy seeing Bandstand but the whole experience was frustrating from beginning (even before I bought the tickets) to the end (or lack thereof since we didn't actually see the end of the show!).

People in the audience were so annoyed that during one of the times that we were waiting for someone to head back to the booth to fix things, someone suggested that we all needed to go to the ticket booth as a group after the movie and ask for a refund. But of course they'd rather give us passes (which cost them nothing) than actually give us our money back!

As for the show itself, Corey Cott and Laura Osnes were great, as was Beth Leavel. The dancing in the big group scenes was awesome.

Last year they were talking about doing a tour but I'm assuming that everyone is tied up with new commitments. Has anyone gone to see the Danny Nova Band performances?.

Heard from a very reliable source that the audio will likely be adjusted in subsequent iterations, either reprise Fathom showing or streaming. That's good news: the creatives are aware it was disappointing, at least in some venues. I was in a good theater (the sound there for "A Quiet Place" had been exquisite, and that film has an intricate Dolby schema.) I tried to go with it, though it became very low. found it hard to ascertain the problem: at first I thought the brighter sound was being withheld for the strictly diegetic numbers, when the hot mics were on.  But the dialogue scenes -- sans any singing at all - were often the highest volume, and I can't say that Osnes's vocals behind the mic had more oomph. Again, the biggest issue was the audio "attack" in the show, that sound of gunfire seguing into drums, thrilling in the Jacobs.  It was so muted you couldn't tell the show had started, and some audience members continued to talk, and loudly, until we shushed them and the lights came up on the players. "There is a train..." was so low, my heart sank. And then I tried to be hopeful.

Next time.
