It was just a lack of taste. I completely understand the reasoning behind it. But by him doing what he did, the first thing I woke up to was “DeNiro says ‘F*** Trump’ at Tony Awards”, instead of “The Band’s Visit and Harry Potter Win Big at this year’s Tony Awards!”

I hate Trump as much as the anyone could and I thought De Niro was childish last night. So many award winners said basically the exact same thing in their speeches about inclusion and diversity in a much more eloquent manner. He took the easy way to get a laugh and applause and looked like a moron flexing his arms on the stage.

Its disappointing that he has stolen the headlines from the artists who performed and won awards last night.

"I agree what De Niro did was selfish, but in a different way.  Those mere seconds are going to cause more harm, in the long run. We already know by now, Trump has childish ways.  He retaliates.  Trump will get even with De Niro and the people in the room who gave him a standing ovation.  I predict furthers cuts in government funding for the arts.  Trump will do this and in his mind think "Let them insult me...I'll show them".

Trump is in Singapore with leader of North Korea , you really think he is going to notice or care what DeNiro said last night. It is not exactly the first time this sentiment has been expressed - lol.

It was a night to celebrate excellence in theater and get publicity for the winning shows, DeNiro hijacked the event, well played you freaking jerk.

If you think Trump is ever going to miss something said about him on American television, you’ve been missing the past three+ years. All he cares about is himself and ratings and attention. He may not have watched the Tony Awards but he knows what was said.

I was glad that he said it.  It is too easy to become complacent.  The rest of the world needs to be constantly reminded that there are a lot of Americans who hate the very thought of this pig.  I have never been a very emotional person, yet every day I wake up, the very first thought that comes to my mind -- I am dead serious -- is 'is he dead yet?'.  I know the answer is 'no', but i need to believe that this nightmare is going to be over.

I love watching the Tonys, have since I was a kid; but in the final analysis, it is an award show.  What Trump is doing to their country is positively scary and a large segment of the people who support him are too stupid to see it.  He has allowed them to be more open about their hate and they are too focused on that liberation to worry about the long term impact of his actions.  I personally wish there were more people speaking out about Trump on a daily basis, and that includes the Bushes, Clinton, Carter, Obama, and others in the public eye.

I am sure he will find out but when you are in major peace talks with North Korea, I really think DeNiro's comment is not something he is really going to worry about for quite awhile.

Honest question because I really do not know. Has Trump ever responded to all the comments made about him in at other award shows?  We shall see (lol) if Trump sends out a tweet about it.

Ado Annie D'Ysquith said: "As someone whose abstract thinking is often limited, I wanted to address a question to Dancingthrulife2. I admire your "big picture" train of thought, but what can actually be done about all the problems you mentioned? I'd want to make a difference as much as the next gal...but I'm just one person. For you, where does change begin?"

I think change can only happen when more and more people realize that we are not really living in a well-functioning democracy but actually an oligarchy. And stopping playing number's game is the first thing an individual can do. I know personally a lot of people voted for Hilary not because she's the best candidate but because she's not him. We are living in a world where there's a kind of false either-or thinking that keeps us from seeing the other choices we have. Ideally, democracy should be a system where you vote for who you think represents you, not the lesser of two evils. However, because we think some candidates have no path of winning that we stop voting for them. And because of this, the two major parties, especially the dems, think that they deserve the votes rather than need to actively win them. If enough people vote for a third party, it is possible for one or both of the major parties to actually pay attention to those people whose votes they own and start making some changes. It needs to be a collective effort, and given how easily people are influenced by the mainstream media, the path is an uphill climb.

I think the country paid attention in 1992 when Ross Perot got almost 20 million votes which was about 19% of the vote. I thought back then that maybe this would possibly change things but sadly it did not.

Justtherehanging said, "Now we ask why our country has such much violence. You have your answer in his hate speech."

Are you kidding?  Have you not noticed how evil drump is and how he emulates dictators, lines his pockets with government money, lies daily to the point of pathological?  DeNiro expressed what many of us feel. That disgusting piece of sxxx can't leave that WH soon enough. Don't watch his films. At least he's exercising free speech, something the agent orange deplores.

But the thing is, he got 0 electoral vote. In a system where 20%'s popular vote translates to 0 electoral vote, it's no surprise nothing has changed.

Loved it.  Glad he said it.  The overwhelming audience response demonstrated an appreciation for his candor, which I found not only appropriate in these times, but also for this event, which is about the recognition of those who are either members of, or supporters of and advocates for, communities that will be most negatively impacted by this fool's policies.  The hypocritical megalomaniac who is our President wants to silence any media that says anything negative about him and considers criticism to be "treasonous".  If anything, De Nero called to my attention how, in an auditorium full of people trained to be in touch with their emotions and bravely express themselves, we should have heard MORE comments like his throughout the evening.  There were plenty of other more eloquent and tactful similar sentiments expressed in the acceptance speeches that were also appreciated, but these days, like so many others, I need to hear the unedited outspoken support of those like De Nero.  I only wish I could have heard more from De Nero and less from Springsteen, who was the one true snooze-worthy performance of the evening.

And for all the cynical comments regarding the low ratings of the Tonys every single year, I really don't think De Nero's comment getting press is such a horrible thing.  People interested in the Tonys would click on the winner's announcement link, regardless.

But by him doing what he did, the first thing I woke up to was “DeNiro says ‘F*** Trump’ at Tony Awards”, instead of “The Band’s Visit and Harry Potter Win Big at this year’s Tony Awards!”

Which will probably result in more clicks related to a Tonys headline in the last 20 years.

Thank you Robert De Nero, for saying it loud, proud and fearlessly for the world to hear.

I find it equally reprehensible that Noma Duzezweni said Trump was not welcome at Harry Potter.

Ok- De Niro was not articulate- and he is just an actor- we need Obama- GW Bush, Clinton and Carter to speak out- and forcefully- and state the obvious with conviction and alarm- we are quickly losing our democracy and descending into a fascist dictatorship- we- along with De Niro - need to implore our ex-presidnts to sound the alarm bells- not simply actors and late night tv hosts.

I find it everything Trump says to be not only reprehensible, but dangerous to our country, its citizens and our allies.  He wouldn't ever be interested in seeing Harry Potter, anyway, so I love that she made a point of it.  I want a LOT more of this.  Be vocal.  Be public.  Be fearless.  We need it.

Uhhh, yes. Do you know anything about this man? He absolutely cares about what is said about him and will absolutely hear about it. That’s not even a question.
